trespassers from proceeding into your building. Furthermore, auto-arming systems contribute to opera- tional efficiency. They eliminate the need for manual activation and deactivation of security measures, reduc- ing the workload on staff and minimizing the risk of oversights. This not only streamlines day-to-day opera- tions but also ensures that security protocols are consis- tently applied without lapses.
UTILIZE LOCKS AND LATCHES
Locks and latches are ultimately your last line of defence. If trespassers manage to bypass your in-place external security measures, they are generally one snip away from gaining access to your clients’ belongings. Most storage facilities have padlocks of all shapes and sizes hanging from the latches. The common denomina- tor for most of these locks is the fact that it would take an intruder less than five seconds to cut the lock and gain access. What can we do to prevent access from our last line of defence? When it comes to latche s, there are high-tech and low-tech solutions. High-tech solutions would consist of Bluetooth latches that you could open with your phone that do not require a physical padlock. This solution does make it difficult for intruders to use standard tools to gain access, however this solution requires significant communica- tion upgrades to your facility, including signing up for a service subscription—something none of us enjoy. A low-cost, low-tech option that has proven to be an effective solution is the cylinder latch, also referred to as a barrel latch by some. This too prevents intruders from using conventional tools to gain access and works
as a strong deterrent. The latches require a custom lock that your retail supplier should be able to supply. These are not available in any retail store and there- fore would ensure your clients have one of the best lines of defence as well as peace of mind. The cylinder locks have been proven to be a simple yet extremely effective way to keep intruders away. Storage facilities that make cylinder locks mandatory not only intensify the security of the facility but also enjoy a healthy return on the investment as lock sales are no longer an option but a requirement.
INTEGRATE PERIMETER BEAMS
In the ever-evolving landscape of self-storage security, the integration of perimeter beams stands out as a formidable defence mechanism. These advanced sensors create an invisible shield around the facility, offering an additional layer of protection against potential intruders. For storage facilities with drive-up units or a combination of unit types, perimeter beams have proven to be highly effective. In the early days, perimeter beams were installed along the fence line. Many times, operators would abandon these systems due to an abundance of false alarms caused by animals and weather conditions. The new systems get installed along the building. This would avoid animal activity and only trigger when trespassers attempt to open a door after the restrict- ed hours. Audible alarms are also highly encouraged to startle a trespasser.
INSTALL PROPER LIGHTING In the realm of self-storage security, the impact of proper lighting cannot be overstated. Adequate illumi- nation is not merely a practical necessity but a funda- mental aspect of a comprehensive security strategy. Well-planned and strategically positioned lighting serves as a powerful deterrent, enhancing visibility and con- tributing to the overall safety of a storage facility. Trespassers do not enjoy working in the “spotlight.” Visit your store at night regularly and assess your lighting. Look for vulnerable areas with limited lighting and assess installing additional lighting or motion-sensor spotlights. It is also highly encouraged to upgrade to LED. The older style of halogen lights is not as effective as the new LED light options. You might even qualify for a rebate in a few provinces.
ADD SECURITY CAMERAS
Security cameras are still an imperative piece to our business, and the technology is advancing quickly. Clients pay to have security, and one of the first features they look for are cameras. A wide coverage of HD cameras displayed in your rental office on screens may help “secure” the sale. When something does happen, it is reassuring to know you have the camera recordings. It is
