IN MEMORIAM

hands, demonstrating his ability to innovate and think ahead of the curve. Beyond his professional achieve- ments, Hal was a man of great kind- ness and generosity. A proud veteran of the United States military, he served his country with the same toughness and stoicism that defined his charac- ter. Throughout his life, Hal remained a mentor and friend to many, always willing to lend a hand both publicly and privately. His work in the commu- nity, especially cooking meals for underprivileged youth, highlighted his deep-seated kindness and commitment to making a difference. As we mourn Hal’s passing, we also celebrate an extraordinary life. His legacy is one of strength, resilience, and compassion, but also of innovation and forward-thinking. Hal Sidney Spradling was a unique blend of a hardworking visionary and a compas- sionate leader.

In remembering Hal, we are inspired by his journey from the fields of Texas to becoming a pioneering figure in his field. His life story is a powerful reminder of what it means to face challenges with resilience, lead with compassion, and innovate with vision. Hal may have left us, but his legacy will forever remain a guiding light for those who knew him and for future generations. The world has lost a truly exceptional individual, but Hal Sidney Spradling’s remarkable spirit will continue to inspire and be a beacon of excellence.

Vancouver and spent most of his young life in the Dunbar area. His family moved to North Vancouver in his early teens, and he established many long-lasting friendships. He attended Delbrook High School and then the University of British Columbia (UBC), where he received his Bachelor of Commerce. During his time at UBC he played Rugb y, and throughout his life enjoyed playing almost any competi- tive sport. He often talked about his summer jobs he had between school semesters. The jobs were usually in the B.C. bush logging, prospecting, mining, and diamond drilling. He loved the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwes t, and throughout his life revisited these experiences with his friends and children, taking them canoeing, horseback riding, and hiking. Eventually he married Diane (1966) and moved out to the Fraser Valley, where he established his career in real estate. Along the way he invested in the self-storage business, building two facilities and becoming an expert on running and developing this type of business. He was a founding member of the Canadian Self Storage Association. Ken was a gentle giant with a loud voice and a presence that you couldn’t ignore. However, he is best remembered by his wonderful sense of humour and his very funny stories. He would like to be remem- bered as being very, very funny.
