Young Leaders Council Update By Cynthia Poulin

As

we wrap up this rollercoaster year of 2021, we wish every- one a very happy, healthy, and prosperous 2022! On Dec. 7,

2021, we celebrated the holiday season with our “Holiday Edition” Virtual Young Leaders Council Virtual Event. Coming to- gether once again virtually from coast to coast, we were able to connect with no limits other than physical distance limits.

2021 Recap In conclusion of our 2021 year, we are grateful, and we like to take the time to reflect on the great leaders and spon- sors with whom we have had the plea- sure of working. It was a huge honor to introduce our guest speaker Mike Burnam, CEO of StorageMart, in January of 2021 to the Canadian YLC. He shared his wisdom, knowledge, and experiences, and was so well received by the Young Leaders that they just simply could not get enough of him! Thank you, Mike Burnam, it is always a pleasure to have you with us.

In the spring, we welcomed Steven

Scott, chairman and CEO of StorageVault Canada, to our virtual stage. It was a great discussion; we talked about the new strategies that the pandemic allowed in our industry and how acceptable the ad- vancement of our frontlines and customer service is becoming now with more virtual and digital presence in our operations. He stressed the importance of a good web- site that communicates clearly and mak- ing sure the performance of it is perfec- tion and always at the top of it game! As millennials, we are able to adapt quickly; for our customers in the baby boomer gen- eration, learning new technology skills and practices are becoming regular adjust- ments. This leaves no generation behind

for the growth of our ever-advancing industry. Thank you so very much Ste- ven Scott for sharing with us your “se- crets to success” at a young age!

In mid-September, we had the op-

portunity to connect with Robert Madsen in an open question and an- swer presentation (scheduled for one hour and lasted for two) that directed the Young Leaders Council to dig deep into their real contemplative thoughts within today’s storage industry. Mad- sen is the president of the U-Lock Mini Storage Group and a previous member of the CSSA Young Leaders Council both in Canada and the United States. Many members and guests of the CSSA also know him from past events of the Canadian Self Storage Association, as our “Moderator Extraordinaire.” As a second-generation storage indus- try entrepreneur, he expressed the importance and intention of having lunch meetings with team members, mentors, and even the first-gener- ation of command situations such as parents. Madsen continued to speak about having a more casual level to gather information and collaborate with his self-storage team on a regular basis, sharing that it’s all about en- couraging your staff/team members to be creative and brainstorm new, out-of-the-box solutions and creating ways to help your team be excited and productive. This, in turn, encour- ages a happy self-storage team, which equates to happy and very satisfied self-storage customers. Thank you so very much Rob Madsen for joining us and giving us a truly interesting and fascinating perspective from one of our own Young Leaders!

15 Our final virtual event of the year was

our Holiday Zoom Party. This brought us to the ultimate holiday challenge for our Young Leaders, as there “is no party like a Canadian Self Storage Association Young Leaders’ Council Party.” First up we asked our members to “deck up their storage facility,” and submit their photos to us. We then created a fun and beau- tiful short video to showcase the mem- bers’ efforts to make their self-storage facilities festive and ready for the holi- day season. CSSA members can view this video, along with all of our 2020 to 2021 virtual events, at www.cssa.ca. It was terrific to see how differently each facility was decorated, and we were thrilled to see how many of our own are actively helping their own communities during this time of year. Some of the self- storage companies sent in photos that in- cluded their participation in various toy collections, food drives, and more. Hats off to you all! Being a positive part of your community is truly something that we endorse and support throughout the year. The Canadian Self Storage Associa- tion and the Young Leaders Council is so very proud of you for supporting your communities! Thank you!

Holiday Party Back to the YLC holiday celebration. First off, as Zoom games go, our first- ever Self-Storage Trivia Challenge, spon- sored by SmartStop Self Storage, did the trick. Congratulations to David Allan on showing us his amazing self-storage trivia skills! The trivia game was followed by a good ole fireside chat. This was a very entertaining and informative session where each person in attendance shared some of their most interesting, unusual, and sometimes hilarious self-storage
