with exterior drive-up units, it also sees the fewest number of renters utilizing exterior units without drive-up access (9.2 percent). That having been said, 13.5 percent of tenants in the South rent this time of unit, followed by 12.8 percent in the West and 12.1 percent in the Midwest. Across the board, this type of unit has the lowest percentage of renters, quite possibly because fewer of that type of unit are built.
Interior units with elevator access are utilized by 22.6 per-
cent of the renters in the Northeast, followed by 21.1 percent in the West. The remaining two regions, the South and the Midwest, see 17 percent and 8.8 percent, respectively.
Interior units with drive-up access are also less often built than other types of units, therefore, it is no surprise that we see between 16.5 percent and 11.7 percent rented. The high- est percentage (16.5) is in the South, followed by 16.1 in the West, 13.5 percent in the Northeast, and 11.7 percent in the Midwest.
The type of unit by community type or urbanization
can be seen in Table 9.5. Exterior units rented with drive-up parking is clearly highest in rural areas at 77.1 percent, while urban renters using this type of unit comes in at 52.8 percent. Slightly more than 51 percent of suburban customers rent this type of unit.
Exterior units without drive-up parking are only used by
14.9 percent of urban renters. And while 12.2 percent of rent- ers in the suburbs use this type of unit, only 5.9 percent do so in rural areas. Conversely, interior units with drive-up access are used by more than 15 percent of renters in suburban and urban area, with 12.8 percent in rural communities.
Interior units with elevator access are used by renters pre-
dominately in suburban markets, as seen in Table 9.5. Urban areas see 17.3 percent of renters surveyed using this type of unit. It comes as no surprise that rural areas see the fewest

of these types of renters (4.2 percent), since multistory facili- ties are typically built in more heavily populated areas where there is less land to build sprawling single-story facilities.
How far renters are willing to drive to get to their unit plays an important role in the choice of facility.

As seen in Chart 9.4, more than 60 percent of renters prefer to drive less than 19 minutes; 30.3 percent of those renters are only will- ing to drive less than 10 minutes. Approximately 18.7 percent are willing to travel 20 to 29 minutes, and 11.4 percent seek a drive time of 30 to 44 minutes. Only 7.7 percent are willing to drive 45 minutes or more.
Chart 9.5 looks at how often renters visit their units. The
majority of renters (23.9 percent) visit their units about once a month; this is the highest percentage of renters. Approxi- mately 17.8 percent visit once a week, while 17.6 percent visit
