WE ARE LISTENING AND LEARNING…


CEO Mukund Krishna shares the valuable insights he has gained recently from engaging directly with PFEW membership


Visiting forces around England and Wales, I have had meaningful and open conversations about the topics that matter the most to you, and I am appreciative that members and reps have been coming with questions for discussion. I know not every member can take time out to attend or, as this is just beginning, may not be aware of the details. However, I am listening, and I will continue to share details of upcoming sessions so that more of you can be involved and hopefully find the same value. At Greater Manchester Police, we discussed the organisational and reputational similarities between the Federation today and GMP of two years ago. It was a privilege to hear about the progress made by GMP over the last few years and how they have overcome various challenges to become one of the most celebrated forces in England and Wales. I have also had the opportunity to tour Mount Browne Headquarters in Guildford, Surrey. It was here that, with the help of the Darren Pemble and Tom Arthur, Chair and Secretary of the Surrey Federation Branch, we spoke to officers on the job and those who were answering emergency calls. We discussed topics like supporting

their families and mental health as well as their thoughts on industrial rights. Over the course of these visits, there have been a number of questions about the role of the CEO and how it came into being. The Employment Tribunal’s judgment in June 2023 exposed systemic weaknesses in our decision-making structures. Therefore, the National Board felt that there was an urgent need to add

professional expertise to complement the elected leadership. The CEO, as a non- elected officer, would owe their loyalty to PFEW as a whole and not just to the elected representatives. This arrangement was set out in a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Council and the National Board, which was subsequently signed by almost 90% of the 43 Branches in England and Wales. Many attendees wanted an update on the settlement of the Employment Tribunal which I have previously indicated that we are working towards. All I can say at this stage is that we are working night and


day to find a settled resolution that meets our responsibilities to the claimants while retaining the long-term financial future of the Federation. I will keep members posted as soon as we have more to say on this issue.


Another theme that has been emerging is communication around key decisions made. That is why I hope to improve communication from Leatherhead by making sure PFEW information is more accessible. Meeting members from the Met in Bromley, we discussed how the in-person events were a good way to get this information and that there needs to be other options rather than just emails. I am looking into possible solutions to ensure that members and reps are receiving key communications. Holding visits and roadshows across England and Wales is a priority for me: we exist for our members and so your voice is what matters. We must also do our best to dispel any rumours and misinformation, and present Federation members with the right facts on the future of our organisation which I hope these visits are doing. It will take time to make the necessary transformation, but I am committed to making sure it delivers for you.
