CRIME PREVENTION cost as possible.

The academy also delivers several online courses free of charge, which are available to all police officers and staff. These courses, funded by the Home Office, have been created to support officers and staff and are designed with their busy schedules considered. The academy also offers a wide range of qualifications and CPD courses, which are perfect for officers and staff at all levels

and offer a good opportunity to upskill and refresh knowledge in the workplace. It is responsible too, for the mandatory annual CPD that a number of NPCC designated specialist roles within policing are required to undertake - Police Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs), Crime Prevention Officers (CPOs) and Police Alcohol Licensing Officers (PALOs).

SECURED BY DESIGN One of the most impactful Police CPI initiatives, in terms of impact on industry standards and manufacturing processes, is the Secured by Design (SBD) work that has been ongoing for over 35 years and has been academically proven to reduce

crime by up to 87 per cent when used in developments, with this prevention of crime freeing up immeasurably valuable police officer time. On behalf of the UK police service, SBD

as being sufficiently robust to resist physical attack by casual and opportunistic burglars/thieves.

SBD requires all security products

“SBD requires all security products to meet or exceed the performance expectations documented within the relevant security standard for that type of product. The SBD focus is on the critical factors that combine to deliver a product’s performance - design, use, quality control and the ability to deter or prevent crime.”

also operates an accreditation scheme for products or services that have met recognised security standards. These products or services – which must be capable of deterring or preventing crime - are known as being of a ‘Police Preferred Specification’. Police CPI provides a framework where good quality crime prevention products and services can be recognised by policing on an objective basis in a standardised and consistent manner. An effective deterrent, financially wise for manufacturers and product customers, the accreditation scheme has been operating for 25 years and there are approximately 700 current member companies with 7,000 products approved

to meet or exceed the performance expectations documented within the relevant security standard for that type of product. The SBD focus is on the critical factors that combine to deliver a product’s performance - design, use, quality control and the ability to deter or prevent crime.

This includes doors,

windows, external storage, bicycle and motorcycle security, locks and hardware, asset marking, alarms, CCTV, safes, perimeter security products and many others.

SBD is the only way for companies to

obtain police recognition for security- related products in the UK. Other areas that Police CPI is having significant impact are within the licensing and leisure industries.

The Licensing Security Vulnerability Initiative (Licensing SAVI), uniquely promotes the police licensing objectives. Launched in 2021 to keep licensed premises safe for both staff and customers, initial indications suggest that in areas where this initiative has been adopted a 30 per cent reduction in demand for police assistance from licensed premises can be achieved. As well as providing safer and more secure venues for managers, staff, customers, and local communities, it also seeks to reduce demand on police forces, NHS ambulance services and accident and emergency departments.
