2024 POLICE BRAVERY AWARDS She was now trapped with the violent male who was reported
to have a knife, sexually assaulting her. Despite the horror and fear she was experiencing, she remained focused and activated her emergency button, however, it didn’t work as the offender inadvertently switched the radio channel in the melee. Thankfully, she was assisted by a member of the public and they managed to drag the offender out of the vehicle. She then exited the vehicle, drawing her Taser as the male began to flee. Despite having been assaulted, she chased after the male. When she caught up with him, he threw himself to the floor as if to submit. Still with Taser drawn, PC Chapman gave clear verbal commands to safely detain him.
He was seemingly compliant with these instructions, so she moved into detain the male. At this point the offender jumped to his feet and once again started to attack her. Being too close to deploy Taser, she grappled with him, managing to free herself and create sufficient distance to discharge her Taser which was successful at first.
He once again sprung to his feet, ignoring commands to stay
down on the floor. Taser was deployed a second time, but it failed, and he began to charge at a member of the public. Thankfully he was tackled to the ground by a bystander. PC Chapman, with the assistance of a further member of public, was able to detain the individual on the ground and make an arrest before further police units arrived.
DURHAM and needed to be transported to hospital.
As the officers left the address having dealt with the call, a large quad bike emerged at speed from the darkness and headed directly towards them on the public footpath. Making the decision to stop the quad bike, PC Furlonger faced the vehicle as it approached, at which point the driver intentionally steered and at speed rammed straight into PC Furlonger, striking him with such force he was thrown through the air, receiving a compound fracture to his tibia and his fibula in his right leg, before making off. Despite his injuries he was able to identify the driver of the quad having come into contact with him at a previous call that day. Knowing this information would be crucial in apprehending the dangerous suspect as soon as possible and removing him from the streets, PC Furlonger was able to provide updates on his radio.
He was aware his leg was badly broken yet continued to relay information about the suspect, vehicle, and circumstances. The accuracy and speed of these updates led a short while later to the arrest of the suspect. The road to recovery for PC Furlonger has been significant; off work for several months and having a metal rod inserted into his leg over several operations, but despite this his drive, enthusiasm and passion to return to the role has not wavered.
DYFED POWYS PC Rhodri Jones rushed to the edge of a 100ft dam to rescue an injured woman and her dog. Dyfed-Powys Police received a report from a member of the public that his two dogs had gone over the edge of the Caban Coch Dam. One dog appeared deceased
and was caught on an outcrop halfway down the dam face but the other was alive and badly injured. The caller’s partner has climbed over and attempted to retrieve the dogs but had fallen down the sluiceway causing significant facial injuries and a probable broken wrist.
She now had hold of the injured dog on the edge of the dam and in danger of falling off the edge which would have been a drop of almost 100ft. PC Jones and PC Peter Evans were first on scene saw the female was in a very precarious position and was in danger of falling to her death. Mountain Rescue was 45 minutes away and the female was only preventing herself from falling by jamming her foot up against a stone sticking out of the slippery dam face, so they knew they had to act fast.
PCs Evans and Jones identified a possible route to the victim and forced entry through a steel door to a room within the dam which contained an area where excess water overflows into before going down the sluiceway. PC Jones lowered himself down into the overflow area and
