TWO YEARS’ JAIL FOR BIRMINGHAM UBER DRIVER WHO SEXUALLY ASSAULTED STUDENT
A Birmingham Uber driver sexually assaulted a teenage student after ‘trapping’ her in his car during a nine-minute terror journey. The 19-year-old victim was on her way to work when she was molested by the father-of-three. Deeq Mursal, 38, picked her up at 5.40am in December 2018 to take her to an early shift at a hotel. She had wanted to get in the back of his vehicle but the defendant instructed her to get in the front, in breach of his training. She agreed, Birmingham Crown Court was told, but over the next nine minutes she was sexually assaulted by Mursal, before eventually he dropped her near
her work - out of sight of CCTV.
Mursal was jailed for two years after being found guilty of sexual assault. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years.
In passing sentence, Judge Paul Farrer QC said he believed the attack was planned from the moment he picked the victim up. “You pulled away and almost immediately placed your hand on her inner leg and ran it up her inner thigh-to her groin, despite
her repeated protests,” he said. The judge said Mursal continued to sexually assault her during the journey and that he had taken a “circuitous” route and deliberately driven in the wrong direction. The court was told the defendant asked the victim to go to a hotel with him and grabbed her hand and tried to get her to touch him, but she managed to pull away. The judge continued: “It was dark and there were no cars about and no one knew where the victim was. In those circumstances she was understandably terrified. “This was a sustained attack upon a young vulnerable woman who trusted you to transport her safely.”

An Uber driver who sexually assaulted a ‘terrified’ passenger by forcing himself uon her and kissing her in his cab has been jailed. The Star reports that Sheffield Crown Court heard on October 10 how Zafran Hussain, 24, from Sheffield, sexually assaulted the woman after he had agreed to give her and her friend a lift home following a night out. Richard Sheldon, prosecuting, said the 19-year-old woman and her friend approached Hussain for a lift for £25 and he agreed. After one of the women had been dropped off he arrived near the complainant’s Sheffield home and forced himself upon her. Hussain asked the complainant to move to the front seat after they

reached her address and as they sorted out payment with a bank transfer, he pushed his face towards her kissing her fully. Mr Sheldon said: “She was shocked and terrified. She grabbed the handle and he said ‘another one’ and the defendant pushed his lips on to hers kissing her for another four or five seconds.” The complainant feared what would happen next and ran home. The defendant was traced by his bank account details. Hussain, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the woman
after the incident on July 25, 2021. The complainant stated: “He acted like a predator. He was supposed to take me home but instead he subjected me to a sexual assault.” Judge Michael Slater, who sentenced Hussain to 15 months of custody, said he understands Hussain will not be able to drive a taxi for a long time or ever again once the council has been notified. He added: “As a taxi driver you were holding a position of trust because what is a taxi driver other than a custodian of the safety of the person or persons he is conveying.”
He added: “I accept this was opportunistic rather than planned but it was a serious abuse of trust by you working as a taxi driver.”
