DISGRUNTLED CABBIE WRITES LETTER TO DfT REGARDING INEQUALITY OF BRADFORD CAZ
To be clear, this cabbie is a private hire driver of a hybrid vehicle so does not have to pay the charge himself, but he has written this letter to highlight the issue that cabbies are not being treated equally.

I am writing this email to highlight an issue with Bradford’s clean air zone that was implemented on the 26th of September, 2022. I have never had an issue with the Clean Air Zone and was always in favour of the implementation of the scheme as I have suffered from the effects of poor air quality and Covid-19 brought that issue home to me.
However, Bradford went ahead and applied a C+ CAZ, at the time I didn’t know what that actually meant until I came across the letter below sent to someone from Bradford Council days before its implementation.
The compliance requirement for a hackney carriage, regardless of seats or whether it’s a WAV, is a bare minimum Euro 6 diesel. Bradford has a 100% wheelchair accessible hackney carriage fleet.
The compliance requirement shown above for a licensed private hire vehicle or a taxi, regardless of seats, is a Euro 5 petrol hybrid or LPG Euro 5 petrol.
Taxi in legal terms means hackney carriage. If councils themselves can’t get the terminology correct and give us the impression that private hire vehicles are taxis, as that is what we were told, that taxis and private hire vehicles would have to have a hybrid requirement as a bare minimum. (Maybe they were using the word as a colloquialism).
The standard should be applied equally to both hackney carriage and private hire but as it stands again we (private hire) are sidelined by these councils that have no idea of the correct terminology to use whether that be deliberate or by mistake.
