£1 FARES FOR BARNSLEY TAXIS ON WAY BACK TO TOWN
Barnsley drivers on their way back into the town centre have start- ed taking passengers with them for £1 under a new scheme.
It’s been set up by the Hackney Carriage Association. About 50 drivers have signed up so far, and chairman Mark Cox is confident that all 72 hackney drivers will join the scheme.
Once the hackney car- riages have dropped off a passenger and begin their journey back into town, if they are flagged down they will take passengers with them for £1 no matter where in Barns-
ley they are.
Mark told the Barnsley Chronicle: “Let’s say we take someone out to Wombwell. Barns- ley to Wombwell is normally, roughly, about £8. If someone flags the driver down anywhere on the route back into town, we’ll take them for £1 - but it’s got to be back into town.”
The offer is £1 per pas- senger, but if there are several passengers, the association guar- antees it will be less than the metered fare, so it could in some sit- uations end up less than £1 per person. Mark said the scheme

was set up for ‘lots of reasons’ including reducing carbon emis- sions, and bringing in more business for the hackney trade. He admitted there had been a slump in pas- senger numbers since the recession. He said: “We’re going to trial it, and hopefully if the public respond well to it, we’ll do it permanently.”
The scheme operates from 7am until 8pm every day including bank holidays. Participating drivers will carry a yellow sticker in the top left corner of their wind- screen.

SHEPPEY CABBIE UNDER FIRE FOR DELIVERING BOOZE AND CONDOMS
A dad who is making money delivering booze, cigarettes and condoms to people’s homes has defended the morality of his business.
Brian Thorpe launched Sheppey Dial A Beer with his brother last month after his job as a taxi driver helped him see a market for it. On its Facebook page the company is listed as being a profession- al alcohol and cigarette delivery serv- ice direct to your door. However, the idea of people being able to get their fixes by mak- ing a phone call doesn’t sit well with everyone. The Rev Barry Birch said he believed it will encour- age drinking, smoking and possibly under- age sex, and Christine Maxwell from the Wl said it is “ridiculous”. But dad of three Brian has hit back - saying
he hopes to help cut drink-driving, encour- age safe sex and even create jobs. The 29-year-old was given the idea when people would call for a lift to Tesco to pick up supplies then go straight home.
It started out as just beer and cigarettes, but after he was asked if he had any condoms during a delivery, he decided to offer those too.
Dial A Beer runs seven days a week from 6pm to 11.30am and offers beers, wines, spirits, mixers, snacks and condoms for card-only payments.
He said at the moment they are getting up to 12 calls a night and have been getting at least ten calls for con- doms a week. Once he delivered five condoms to one household. rian told the Sheer- ness Times Guardian:
“I knew people would be talking about the condoms and I have had a lot of interest - sometimes they sell more than the Fosters. “We are hoping to cut out drink driving and encourage safe sex on the Island.
“I have had people say to me if it wasn’t for us they would have driv- en over the limit. We are looking for some- one else to come on board so it’s also about creating jobs.” But says his company operates a Challenge 25 policy and anyone that cannot prove they are 18 or older will not be served.
He added: “Before we do the sale we ask for ID and if they look too young and can’t prove their age we will cancel the order. We only take a passport, driving licence or citizen card and if they haven’t got that - forget it.”
