JAIL FOR CAMBRIDGE MAN AFTER VICIOUS ASSAULT ON TAXI DRIVER
Punching and kicking a taxi driver after a boozy night out in Cambridge has led to jail for aspiring teacher Robert Usher. The 23-year-old stole Elias Ali’s mobile phone and wallet, which contained £275, after the Punjabi taxi
driver asked for extra money for an addition- al stop.
Usher also threatened to kill Mr Ali and burn his taxi, Cambridge Crown Court was told. Mr Ali’s screams were heard by a police operator after he rang 999 during the attack
in July last year. Sentencing Usher to two and a half years, the judge told him: “Taxi drivers, particu- larly at night, have to be protected.”
The court that heard Usher had three previ- ous convictions for threatening behaviour.
JAIL TERM FOR BRADFORD TAXI FARE EVADER SPOTTED BY POLICE
A 31-year-old man has been given a two- week prison sentence after he admitted fail- ing to pay a taxi fare. According to the Ilkley Gazette, a police offi- cer recognised him as he left the vehicle and approached the driver, magistrates were told. Daniel Green, from Burley-in-Wharfedale,
pleaded guilty to dis- honestly making off without paying the £16.30 fare in May when he appeared before magistrates in Bingley last month. Bench chairman Alice Roberts told Green, who has been in cus- tody awaiting a Crown Court sentence for burglary, that he was
receiving a custodial sentence due to his previous history of dis- honesty.
Mmm...To our knowl- edge, this is the first time a custodial sen- tence has been imposed on a fare dodger. At least a degree of justice has been meted out to a repeat offender - Ed.
PAIR LOCKED UP FOR HIJACKING DONCASTER TAXI
Two men who hijacked a Doncaster taxi and left the driver ‘haunt- ed’ by the terrifying experience have both been locked up. One of them went on to commit another car- jacking while on bail and received a longer sentence.
According to the Star, Ricky Eddleston, 20, from Stainforth, was given a total of four and a half years in a young offenders’ insti- tution after pleading guilty at Doncaster Crown Court to two robberies.
His accomplice, Ryan
Scott Doyle, also 20, from Armthorpe, who pleaded guilty to the charge, received 14 months. Taxi driver Jamil Mohammed was work- ing for Alpha Cabs said: “The incident still haunts me and gives me great concern.”
THUG JAILED FOR STOCKPORT CABBIE ATTACKS
A drunken thug who attacked two taxi drivers in Stockport has been jailed for six months. Lee Killeen, 26, carried out a sustained assault on one of them, punch- ing him so hard that he needed surgery. According to the Stockport Express, Graham Robinson, prosecuting, said
James Skein, one of the taxi drivers assault- ed, saw Killeen trying to flag him down. As he passed him, he saw Killeen standing in the middle of the road in an attempt to block the way for a following car. As Mr Skein parked at a nearby rank, Killeen came over, accused him of trying to run him
down, and punched him. He got out of his vehicle and was attacked by Killeen. Shapoor Montazeri, another cab driver, went to his assistance, and was hit in the face. Killeen pleaded guilty to a charge of assault by beating and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
