TICKETING TRAVESTIES NEW PETROL STATION

PARKING ALERT AT GATWICK

PHTM received the fol- lowing note recently: Please can you alert all visitors to Gatwick Air- port that when I called into the garage at the North Terminal, which used to be owned by BP, is now owned by Shell and they need to be aware of this to avoid parking fines. There are now no signs on the pumps, forecourt or parking areas that there is a parking restriction so I asked a member of

staff what the score was with parking and waiting, bearing in mind I had used the facilities and just got myself a coffee and I was horrified to be told that the waiting time is now 20 minutes. But where are the signs, I enquired? He pointed towards the door and said ‘it’s on the entrance’. I went over to the door to have a read but still couldn’t find it so I went back to him and asked where? I

can’t see it. He then said the entrance, not the door.

I then went to the fore- court entrance and eventually found the sign attached to the back of the In sign for the forecourt.

I think this is a large money racket for someone and I’m sure lots of cabbies will be caught out with this. Mr S Pritchard Proprietor A1 Airport Taxis Kings Langley

HUDDERSFIELD CABBIE: ‘I GOT A TICKET...FOR HELPING A DISABLED MAN’

A cabbie, who parked on double yellow lines to help a disabled man into a care centre, has been fined. Taxi driver Umer Khan thought he was doing his duty when he escorted the disabled man into Gateway to Care in Huddersfield, last month. But Mr Khan, 36, of Birkby, received a nasty sur- prise when a picture of his car parked outside the centre - together with a £70 fine - came through his letterbox. Mr Khan, who works

for A1 Taxis, New- some, believes traffic wardens should use their discretion in such situations.

He told the Hudders- field Daily Examiner: “It’s really unfair.

I

know I parked on dou- ble yellow lines but the person in my car was disabled and I had to take him as close as possible.

“There should be a concession to us if we’re dropping off dis- abled people.”

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said:

“There is an appeal process in place and we would urge the driv- er to appeal through the process on the back of the ticket. “This looks to be one issued automatically and we will look at the circumstances once an appeal is made”. Mmm...Message to Mr Khan, and to Kirklees Council: Get in touch with the NPHA and we’ll send you the case transcript Makda - v - Westminster. That should assist Mr Khan’s appeal - Ed.

NEWARK CAB FIRM CONCERN AFTER PARKING FINE

Newark firm, Yellow Cabs, was asked to pay a £100 fine after the company that monitors the car park at the McDonald’s restaurant, off Lincoln Road, recorded one of its vehicles parking on site for more than seven hours. UK Parking Control Ltd claimed its CCTV clocked the car enter- ing the car park at 8.47am on April 20 and leaving at 3.52pm. The maximum stay for the car park is stated on signs as 90 minutes. The letter sent to the

firm stated the fine must be paid within 28 days. If paid within 14 days the fee is reduced to £50.

It has since rescinded the ticket because what their cameras failed to pick up was that in the time the driver was supposed to have been there, he left to carry fares across the district before returning for an ice-cream later that afternoon.

Mr Simon Sparks, MD of Yellow Cabs, said he was outraged and called for action to be taken against parking

companies.

In a statement UK Parking Control Ltd said: “Correspon- dence was received advising the notice was issued in error. The evidence was checked and the notice immediately cancelled. A letter was forwarded apologising for the inconvenience caused.”

Mmm...So Big Brother got it wrong. How many other innocent motorists - especially licensed drivers - have been penalised like this? - Ed
