BOOK COLUMN

After last month’s initial investments in how we are trying to win £5000 before Royal Ascot, at time of print, we are not doing too badly. I am quite confident in the chances of Spurs winning the FA Cup (advised at 10/1) and depending on whether Liverpool beat Man Utd last Sat-

urday, both Manchester clubs could well be out. That being the case we will have two of the remaining big six in our portfolio. One bit of bad news however was the defection of Spirit Son from the Champion Hurdle picture with a bruised fetlock. That’s £30 down the drain. Anyway, on to this month’s tips.

THE OLYMPICS

Yes, I know it’s in the summer and after Royal Ascot but we can- not let this bit of information go unpunished. So our quest is now to win £5000 for the Olympics. So fill your boots on....WHO WILL BE GREAT BRITAIN’S FLAG BEARER AT THE OPENING CEREMONY? Well let’s see. The person needs to be internationally recognised, an Olympian, synonymous with suc- cess and probably physically strong as it’s a very big stick! There really is only one contender and at the 7/4 being currently of- fered by BET3365 I suggest a maximum wager (well a maxi- mum wager for this column as I would not advocate a stake above £200) on SIR CHRIS HOY. There is one other unbelievable Olympian bet and that is on CHINA winning the most Olympic medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze) following on from the same happening in Beijing in 2008. Again BET365 are betting on the eventuality and the top price of 10/11 has to be taken in what is essentially a two-horse race between them and America. I will take all bets on the flag bearer being Boris Johnson!

STAKING PLAN Sir Chris Hoy £200 win at 7/4 China £110 win at 10/11

RUGBY – THE SIX NATIONS

The recent World Cup in New Zealand has given us the best ref- erence point for the relative standing of the home nations and the continental teams. I have no hesitation in recommending a chunky wager on FRANCE confirming their placement at the

head of the pecking order in the Six Nations. Firstly, it is very hard to win away from home and this year three of France’s five games are at Le Stade Francais. Furthermore one of their away fixtures is at the whipping boys of Italy and their only other away game will probably be a Grand Slam celebration in Cardiff. England are rebuilding, Ireland are collecting their pensions and Wales flatter to deceive (no hate mail please, this is just busi- ness) so the 7/4 (Corals and Ladbrokes) has to be taken.

STAKING PLAN France £80 win at 7/4

RUGBY – THE HEINEKEN CUP

Readers of my column in October will have seen me extol the virtues of CLERMONT at 10/1 before a ball had been kicked and now we are at the knockout stage they have qualified at the expense of Leicester. I hope you were on at 10/1 but even if not they can still be backed at 7/1 for this year’s premier cup com- petition. To augment this stake I would suggest a saver on the other side of the draw in those burly Munster men of MUN- STER. They are universal second favourites at 7/2. The quarter finals begin in April so there is ample time to place a bet at these prices.

STAKING PLAN Clermont Auverge £40 win at 7/1 Munster £30 win at 7/2

SUPERBOWL

This year’s Superbowl comes to its conclusion this forthcoming Sunday and avid readers of this column will realise I am in mourning with the untimely demise of my beloved Ravens. However on the plus side my al- ternates,THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (as laid down in print last September) have qualified for the final. Those of you (like myself) who availed themselves at the 6/1 as a saver will hopefully collect come Mon- day. So it’s one last Hurrah for the Brady bunch and big Bill!! NEXT MONTH IT’S MY FULL ANTE POST LIST FOR CHELTENHAM
