HAPPY ST VALENTINE’S DAY... AND WHAT ELSE?
Traditionally February is considered by many to be a bit of a yawn... but did you know that you could take part in the Great Spitalfields Pancake Race, which this year starts at 12.30pm on Tuesday, 21 February at Dray Walk, the Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London E1 6QL. This day is of course also Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day, or Mardi Gras in New Orleans. And the date for this year’s Brit Awards as well. We also have Collop Monday (20th), named after the traditional dish of the day, col- lops of bacon served with eggs. In days gone by we had Kiss- ing Friday (24th this time round) when Eng- lish schoolboys were entitled to kiss girls without fear of punish-

ment or rejection – a custom that
lasted
until at least the 1940s. And of course this year is a Leap Year, and its extra day the 29th February is Leap Day, when traditionally the woman proposes marriage to the man. Anyone being chased out there? Back to reality for a minute, you’ll see from the front page that we have finally got a decision from ministers:
that ALL

checks. Thankfully a large number of licensing authorities had been continuing with this practice in the interim; now at least it will be given its proper legal sanction. As soon as the rele- vant legislation comes out, you shall be
