AWARDINGACHIEVEMENT
Did you ever have one of those dear ol’ aunties (or the like) who used to say to you, “If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all.” That’s what this page is for: a pat on the back for those who are doing it right. Next time someone has a moan about our trade, show them this fea- ture; it’s in most issues.
QUALIFIED MANCHESTER CABBIES PROVE THEY CARE
More than 700 of Man- chester’s
hackney
carriage and private hire drivers have com- pleted the NVQ which aims to boost their customer care skills. The training includes learning about equal opportunities and dis- ability
awareness,
dealing with luggage and route planning. Dozens of cabbies attended an awards evening at the Town
Hall where they were presented with ‘driver of excellence’ ties. During the last three years around 15 per cent of the city’s 5,000 drivers have undertak- en the qualification. Cllr June Hitchen told the Manchester Eve- ning News: “We’re keen to make sure the hack- ney and private hire drivers we license in Manchester are among the best in the UK.”
WESTONE CARS SHORTLISTED FOR LONDON TRANSPORT AWARD
WestOne Cars has been shortlisted for the prestigious ‘Contribu- tion to Sustainable Transport’ award at the 2012 London Transport Awards. This accom- plishment is a result of WestOne impressing the judges with its comprehensive envi- ronmental programme which has successfully achieved a 4.7 per cent reduction in CO2 emis- sions over the past two years. The London Transport Awards, in association with Transport Times and supported by Lon- don
TravelWatch,
Transport for London, and London Councils, is about recognising
excellence in transport, rewarding innovation and progress for trans- port initiatives which are really working. For the ‘Contribution to Sustainable Transport’ award,

implemented policies to reduce impact on the environment, sup- ported by clear results. WestOne was easily able to meet the crite- ria for
the ‘Cont-
ribution to Sustainable Transport’ award by providing details of its ISO 14001:2004 ac- credited environmen- tal programme which has been implement- ed internally and
externally and in- cludes: • Greenvehicles • Utilisation of fleet through GPS tech- nology
• Greendrivertraining • Environmental anal- ysis and reports for customers
• Carbon offset pro- gramme
• Internal green best practice eg. recy- cling,
electronic
communications and ‘green’ purchasing
As a result of the measures it has taken, WestOne has suc- cessfully achieved a 4.7 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions over the past two years. The
environmental QDELL &LHR EXPRESS CARS INVESTMENT IN TECHNOLOGY AND GREEN ETHOS WINS RECOGNITION
Recently Qdell & LHR Express Cars were awarded “Best Small Private Sector Fleet” and the “Smarter Driv- ing Award” at the 2011 Energy Saving Trust’s Fleet Hero Awards. The Judges praised Qdell & LHR Express Cars for hitting the key criteria in both award categories.
“They
showed good emis- sions reductions, ex- hibited a methodical approach that took a holistic view of the whole issue of fleet emissions,
going
beyond the use of fleet and to energy use in the office. “The company is active on a wide range of fronts in terms of the Smarter Driving agenda. The compa- ny’s driver training programme is impres- sive, as is their approach to communi- cations. Driver satis- faction also appears to be high. Qdell/LHR show an exceptional attitude within their industry.”

Julie Fitzell, Head of Environmental Stan- dards at Qdell & LHR Express Cars, com- mented on how the emission reductions are achieved: “Tech- nology plays a vital part in helping us to achieve our reduced emission targets. We invested in Cordic software to automati- cally
allocate
bookings. The system allows us to specify criteria, which gives greater control over job allocation. “Using Cordic, not only do we send the right vehicle to each job, but it’s also the nearest or closest vehicle to the job. This reduces the dead mileage for each book- ing. The system also provides valuable CO2 data; we can report on each journey’s emis- sions and can also report on the emis- sions due to wasted or dead mileage.” Qdell & LHR Express operate a wide range of vehicles: standard
and helps us to pro- vide a more en- vironmentally friendly offering to clients. “We monitor the book- ings for companies

saloon, estate, execu- tive
and multi-
seaters. The fleet is comprised of a mix of petrol, diesel, elec- tric, hybrid and LPG vehicles which allow Qdell & LHR Express Cars to offer a variety of services and match the vehicle to the needs of
tomer. “Hybrids are great for work in and around London but
not very practical for travel from the airport when you have a fam- ily with cases to take home.” Julie added: “Using the Cordic system, we have been able to effec- tively allocate the most
appropriate the cus-
vehicle based on the customer’s require- ments; this in turn helps improve the quality of our service
each booking all at no additional cost.” In 2007 Qdell & LHR Express Cars brought in a policy to run their diesel vehicles on bio- fuel made from 100 per cent
recycled
cooking oil, refined to less than one micron. Julie comments: “We purchase bulk quanti- ties of biofuel which is stored on our premis- es; we supply this to our drivers at a sub- sidised rate and in return we can monitor the quality of the fuel and quantity taken by each driver.” Grey fleet issues were the next challenge: “The majority of our staff lived locally and either walked, cycled
or shared cars to the office. We only had a few members of staff who used their vehi- cles to travel a distance to the office or needed to travel for business so the solu- tion was quite easy. We set up home work- ing facilities for two employees who lived in Portsmouth and Northampton.
This
helped reduce our car- bon footprint by saving over 160 miles each day for
the
Northampton based employee. Two others lived in Guildford and we gave them a free biofuel allowance to travel to the office together. This worked extremely well. Any other business travel would be undertaken by train when applica- ble.” The Energy Saving Trust is a non-profit organisation that pro- vides free, impartial advice on how to save energy. programme is continu- ally reviewed and updated and WestOne aims to reduce its car- bon emissions by a further eight per cent in the next 12 months. WestOne recognises that its services have an impact on the envi- ronment and the scope, and success, of its environmental programme is testa- ment
to its com-
mitment to minimise that impact. The winners of the London
Awards will announced at
the
annual awards cere- mony which will take place in London on 21st March 2012.
