POLICE APPEAL TO EDINBURGH DRIVERS TO HELP SOLVE BRUTAL MURDER

Lothian and Borders Police investigating the killing of 34-year- old Polish man Maciej Ciania are keen to locate a man who was seen walking in the Leith area and who may have taken a taxi. Mr Ciania was found murdered in his flat in

Dickson Street on Sat- urday morning 14 Jan- uary, by his flatmate. Detectives would like to speak to taxi driv- ers who may have picked up a fare between 10.45pm and 11.30pm on Friday 13 January. According to the Her-

ald, the man is

described as being in his twenties, wearing a dark jacket and grey trousers. He may have spoken with an east- ern European accent. He may have got in a taxi on Easter Road, Leith Walk, or any of the surrounding streets.

WARNING OVER DEWSBURY TAXI GETAWAYS

Taxi drivers are being warned to be on their guard against thieves using them as unwit- ting getaway drivers. Flyers are being posted around taxi offices and mosques in Dewsbury to warn drivers and ask- ing them to look out for suspicious-looking loot.

Insp Dave Barnett told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “As road policing initiatives are designed to deny criminals the use of the roads, it is becoming riskier for burglars to use their own cars. Using what appears to be legiti- mate vehicles with no

linked intelligence

means that taxis and PHVs are less likely to be stopped by the police.” He added: “Items like laptops,

iPads and

phones are easy to conceal. These are the things we’re asking the drivers to look out for.”

SHOPLIFT MAN LINED UP ANGUS TAXI AS GETAWAY

An Angus man who asked a taxi to wait while he shoplifted from Asda,

has

appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court. Michael Nicoll, from Arbroath, told police, “It was a one-off - a bad day”, after he took a cab to the supermar- ket at Westway Retail Park on November 23, before going inside to steal alcohol and razor blades. According to the Courier and Advertis- er, the court heard staff at the store had become suspicious after noticing a num- ber of bulges in the 23-year-old’s jacket. Depute fiscal Arlene

Shaw said: “At around 7.50pm in the evening the accused ap- proached the local taxi office and requested a taxi to take him to the local

supermarket,

with various detours. “The taxi arrived and the accused advised the driver to wait in the car park and he would return.” Ms Shaw continued: “He entered the shop and staff approached the accused after noticing he was acting suspiciously.” Nicoll had slipped two bottles of gin and a bot- tle of vodka into his jacket, but was stopped and asked to reveal what he had picked up.

Ms Shaw said: “The accused handed these to the staff and began to leave the shop and walked away. “The

taxi driver

approached him and asked him to pay the taxi

fare, but the

accused told the driv- er to go away.” The taxi driver flagged down a police vehicle and Nicoll was arrest- ed, revealing he had left the shop with razor blades to the value of around £36. He admitted failing to pay for a £20 taxi fare and attempting to steal the goods. Sheriff Fiona Tait called for reports and deferred sentence.

A man in a rage follow- ing a row in a wine bar got a taxi to go and pick up a sawn-off shotgun. Barry Guy, from Rhyl, got back into the taxi, but as he fumbled with the gun he fired it acci- dentally, blasting a hole in the seat and floor. A judge warned Guy, 31, that if the weapon had been held inches higher he could have killed the driver. Guy then went into two clubs looking for his intended victim and in the second, bran- dished the double- barrelled shotgun. Guy then fled Rhyl but was arrested later at

Glasgow Airport. Last month he was jailed for six and a half years after he admit- ted possessing a prohibited weapon, and possessing it with intent to cause fear of violence, during the early hours of July 23. Judge Nicolas Parry said it was only by the grace of God that no serious injuries were caused. Detective Sergeant Mark Abbott of St Asaph CID has wel- comed the sentence. He told the Wales Daily Post: “This was a complex investigation. Extensive

police

inquiries were under- taken which led to the

arrest of 31-year-old Guy. “North Wales Police are intent on ensuring that individuals who commit such serious crimes are brought to justice and the out- come is testimony to this.” Detective Inspector Jo Williams said it was sheer luck no one was injured. She added: “Guy is a violent indi- vidual. The effect that this incident has had on those who were confronted by Guy cannot be underesti- mated and we would like to thank the coura- geous individuals who helped police in this inquiry.”
