6 I Check-in
I
t’s official: Mother Nature is not happy. If 2016’s headlines were dominated by political shocks and untimely celebrity deaths, it feels like this year has been an endless report of natural disasters, from the devastating 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Mexico to the succession of intense hurricanes that have battered the Caribbean and US east coast this summer. As I write, Hong Kong is on lockdown yet again as we ride out the seventh typhoon of the year, and even the mild- weathered UK is dealing with a visit from Hurricane Ophelia. Also at time of writing, Bali has been left hanging by a rumbling Mount Agung. The island’s largest volcano has been on the brink of eruption for over a month, prompting a slowdown in visitors to the tourist-dependent island. However, while people are advised to avoid the eastern area around the volcano, officials are keen to reinforce that the island remains safe. Check out our feature “Balinese beauty” on page 62 for a guide to Ubud and Uluwatu in the volcano-free zone to the south. There’s a stormy atmosphere brewing in our cover image too – an appropriate reference, many might agree, to the current leadership in the US. However, in our feature “Beyond politics” on page 22, we tear our focus away from goings-on at the White House and look instead at the special case of the US capital – a city that thrives regardless of who occupies the Oval Office. On a sunnier note, I’m excited to announce some major
developments at Business Traveller. As of next month, we’ll be sporting a brand-new look thanks to a complete magazine redesign. We’ll be keeping all of the best tips, tricks and insights to the world of corporate travel, but packaged in a sleeker, more modern format. Regular web users will have noticed a smoother, simpler interface at
businesstraveller.com too, as we’ve also launched our revamped website. Here you can access our news, city guides, tried & tested reviews, etc, and get involved with our lively and informative forum – a useful tool for any road warrior. And as if that wasn’t enough, we’ve now branched into
television! Business Traveller TV launched last month with in- flight infotainment episodes: our first one explores the future world of travel, from flying taxis to hotel robots. Catch the show on British Airways, Iberia or Lufthansa – with more airlines coming on board soon. We’d love to hear your feedback on all the changes – get in touch at
