Hyatt Regency Xian
BACKGROUND Following the closure of the Hyatt Xian in 2011, the hospitality group returned to the ancient Chinese city in July 2016 with a new Hyatt Regency property.
WHERE IS IT? The hotel is located in Qujiang District, a fast-developing industrial and tech hub in the southeastern part of Xian, about a 45-minute drive from Xian Xianyang International Airport. The area is also an important cultural district, home to the Great Tang All Day Mall, Xian Concert Hall and Xian Art Museum.
WHAT’S IT LIKE? Unusually low-rise: the hotel is only five storeys due to building restrictions that dictate no structure can be taller than the nearby Unesco-listed Wild Goose Pagoda. The architectural style echoes Xian’s rich history and the palatial grandeur of the Tang dynasty. This is immediately evident in the spacious lobby with its high ceiling and giant inverted golden pyramid decoration.

ROOM FACILITIES There are 298 rooms and suites starting from a generous minimum of 50 sqm. I was upgraded to a Lake View King room on level 5, which comes with an individual balcony to enjoy views over Qujiang Lake (though being so close to the ground did mean I noticed some noise from people in the park in the morning). Decked in earthy tones with oak floors and marble surfaces, the rooms were very elegant and homey. A pomegranate-theme added some personality, with motifs of the fruit coming through in the wall and carpet patterns.
The king-size bed was supremely comfortable, though not quite long enough to accommodate my 6’3” height, forcing me to sleep at a bit of an angle. The rectangular wooden desk offered an ergonomic
workspace, with international sockets equipped on the wall nearby. Complimentary in-room wifi was fast and smooth when I uploaded photos and sent messages. The bathroom was very spacious, with a big bathtub and large shower room. Pharmacopia bath amenities are provided.
RESTAURANTS AND BARS There are three F&B outlets. The Lounge in the lobby offers light snacks, coffee and champagne. It consists of three areas with Chinese, Persian and Italian designs. Hu Pan is the hotel’s signature restaurant, offering a range of Chinese dishes, including dishes from the north, local Xian specialities and Cantonese offerings. The all-day dining restaurant Market Café has a contemporary layout, with a number of sections rather than an open-plan design, which helps to create privacy – particularly when the restaurant is busy. There is also an outdoor dining area if you want to enjoy your meal by the lake. Food choices were wide-ranging and of a good standard. Rooms in the club and suite category also enjoy access to the Regency Club Lounge, which comes with typical perks (breakfast, all-day refreshments, etc).
MEETING FACILITIES Hyatt Regency Xian boasts more than 4,000 sqm of event space, including a 1,220 sqm, high-ceilinged Regency Ballroom and a 400 sqm Regency Salon. The standalone Pavilion area boasts two floors with nine versatile rooms around a central area, including kitchenette spaces to serve groups of varying size.
LEISURE FACILITIES There’s a glass-walled 24-hour gym installed with Life Fitness equipment; a separate yoga room with regular classes; a heated indoor pool with day beds and juice bar, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna; and Flo Spa with treatments based on traditional Chinese principles and natural ingredients.
VERDICT A new introduction to Xian, the hotel is an excellent option for business travellers. Rooms have been thoughtfully designed to offer a comfortable and functional space, while the range of MICE spaces also sets it apart for corporate clients. Valerian Ho
