B AL ANCE OF P OWER I picked up an issue of Business Traveller today and could not help but notice that the products were aimed at men, most adverts showed men as the business travellers and there was an overwhelming undertone of masculinity. In a time that we should be trying to create positive role models for young women, it is important to break certain stereotypes. I do not expect changes in all areas (even my first fitness app did not consider all female traits, and my car seatbelt did not accommodate my bump when pregnant), but if awareness is raised then progress might happen. Hopefully, you will have seen our October issue, which had a feature on clubs for female travellers. This issue has a piece on Paris by Hannah Brandler (page 60) that, among other things, asks what the city is doing to promote women in tech industries.


THE C A S E I S ALTER ED I made a multi-city booking via Opodo: Heathrow- Paris-Helsinki on Air France and Tallinn-Amsterdam- London City on KLM. During the booking process I was advised that “you can add checked baggage once the booking is confirmed”. So I booked at a good fare and then proceeded to add and pay for baggage. Te screen showed an error and told me to call customer service to book it. It was here that my problems


started. Opodo said Air France was blocking the booking for baggage and that I needed to call the airline. Air France said that as these were codeshare flights, I could not pay for baggage online or over the phone and would have to do it at the airport. As a travel coordinator for more than 15 years, I

AIR FRANCE REPLIES: We regret to hear that Mr Carter had a frustrating experience. While we have codeshare agreements with partner airlines, our systems are not always synchronised and, unfortunately, we sometimes encounter situations such as Mr Carter’s, when he travelled on a codeshare flight [Paris-Helsinki] with our partner Finnair. This meant we were unable to add baggage after the time of booking. Mr Carter was then correctly advised by Air France that he would only be able to add on baggage at the airport.

But it incorrectly stated that BMW’s US plant – its biggest in the world – was in Greenville, Georgia [it is actually in Spartanburg, South Carolina].
