Mentoring for CILIP Professional Registration

I have been a CILIP mentor since 2005, when the scheme first began,

July-August 2022

Overall, I can confidently state that being a CILIP mentor is rewarding in many ways ...

and have lost count of the number of mentees I have had since then! I have continued after retirement, and currently have three candidates. Although most of those applying for professional registration are “young professionals”, a few have been older professionals just wanting to gain that all important recognition. Occasionally, it is a requirement of a new role or promotion, which is exactly what CILIP is hoping to see extended further by their partnerships with employers. In the past, I have been approached by candidates in the same region in which I live (formally London, now south Wales) and we have met face-to-face about three times during their portfolio preparation with emails in between when necessary. They have been encouraged to contact their local Professional Registration Support Officers, and attend workshops when available.

Both the PRSOs and CILIP offer frequent online courses on all aspects of professional registration, including reflective writing (a frequent challenge). These are interactive, with plenty of time for questions. CILIP e-learning pages include useful short videos on finding evidence for each of the three required criteria www. cilip.org.uk/page/elearninghub.

I have found the process of encouraging these young professionals very interesting and enriching. I learn so much about their different roles, in all sectors of our profession. Best of all is their enthusiasm for their work, and eagerness to gain a professional qualification! It is no longer compulsory for candidates to find a mentor, but is strongly recommended. Overall, I can confidently state that being a CILIP mentor is rewarding in many ways and takes very little time.

How you can join in!

CILIP are always looking for new mentors to join the process and share their expertise with Professional Registration candidates. All CILIP members who hold a level
