fragettes Top Trumps networking game that ran throughout the conference – and enthused by how HE libraries are the health and wellbeing hearts of their college communities.
During our second keynote, delegates embraced the challenge of extending beyond their comfort zones as we joined Zandra Yeaman, Curator of Discomfort at The Hunterian Museum, to reflect on the progress (or otherwise) of decoloni- sation so far, our collective responsibility to tackle the failures of the past and above all the power of libraries to raise hidden stories to the light. Last but certainly not least for Day One, we were delighted to welcome award-winning author Damian Barr. “My childhood local library saved my
life by helping me imagine a new one”, Damian shared with our spellbound delegates, and such stories of success continued into the evening with the presentation of Scotland’s Library & Information Professional of the Year Award 2022 to SarahLouise McDon- ald, Academic Support Librarian at the University of Edinburgh. Congratulations SarahLouise and thank you for deliver- ing such an ‘inspiring’ and ‘generous’ acceptance speech (in the words of Damian himself)!
Day two dawned with a delegate tour SarahLouise McDonald.
of the nearby V&A Dundee, including an exciting encounter with the largest library book in Scotland. Our first morning keynote was delivered by indefatigable libraries advocate and CILIPS Honorary Member Catherine Salmond, Editor of Scotland on Sunday whose long-running
#SupportOurLibraries campaign has made a passionate and powerful contri- bution to library advocacy in our nation. Next up, we were thrilled to welcome multi award-winning broadcaster, author and activist Gemma Cairney: joining us live from New York for an inspiring and wide-ranging conversation with our Presi- dent Amina Shah. The afternoon’s parallel sessions continued in the same spirit of enquiry, inclusivity and engagement, with themes such as Autism Inclusion and tackling the ebook crisis, how libraries can support LGBTQ+ inclusive education (complementing the Banned Books Week webinar that CILIPS will host later this year) the role of libraries in supporting research and thinking outside the box (or bookshelf) when it comes to library design.
Reflecting on the success of our first in-person conference since pre-pandemic times, perhaps our delegates put it best. “A massive thank you for creating some- thing so special, that made us all feel valued and important during these turbulent years. I personally needed it and missed it!” I had “a really positive first experience attending,” noted another attendee. “It reminded me of why library work is so important, and gave me lots of ideas for the future.” IP
