IN DEPTH

Being part of the CILIP community – what’s in it for you?

No matter where you are in your career, CILIP has something to offer – from first jobs and new starters to seasoned professionals, there are range of benefits and opportunities that can help you and your professional development. Rob Green looks at some of the ways CILIP membership can help you meet your professional goals.

THE Library, Information and Knowl- edge Management profession has numerous strands and sectors, and countless roles within those strands. Yet there is a common thread running through all of these roles and sectors – an understanding that access to information and knowledge can have a transformative effect on users. Whether it is a children’s librarian handing over a first book to a pre-schooler at rhyme type, a health information professional giving a surgeon the latest information on a new technique, or a knowledge manager helping to share an organisation’s internal understanding. Each of those interactions will have a positive impact, and could help to dramatically improve outcomes. CILIP represents all sectors of the profession, drawing on a huge network of experience and knowledge, putting it in a unique position for all library, information and knowledge workers. It is dedicated to uniting, supporting and advocating for information professionals and librarians in all sectors, with core values and ethics at its heart (www.cilip.org.uk/ethics).

Being part of CILIP’s network of knowl- edge and communities gives members a range of benefits and support that will help them to stay engaged with the profession and the changes happening within it. From training, events and networking, to learning resources and Professional Registration

there is something for every member at every stage of their career.

Part of a professional community Whether you seek solidarity with peers facing the same challenges as you, or advice from a veteran who has already dealt with them, you’ll find them in CILIP’s member networks (regional) and special interest groups (sectoral and societal). They can be a gateway to knowledge, expertise and expe- rience that would otherwise be impossible to find.

Regional member networks offer mem- bers in England the opportunity to join communities and find sources of infor- mation and advice. CILIPS, CILIP Cymru Wales, CILIP Ireland and CILIP Overseas
