provide an equivalent for members in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and further afield. These groups introduce you to other professionals, support you through the process of professional registration, connect you to local men- tors and provide a local programme of events and CPD opportunities. There are nine regional networks in England that represent the library and information professionals in their areas, and many more Special Interest Groups (www.cilip.org.uk/community).

Taking part

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved through CILIP, its Special In- terest Groups and its Member Networks. A regular calendar of events includes formal training and events, social meet- ups and more. You can find out what is coming up at www.cilip.org.uk/events. As “in-person” events become more common, post-Covid, it gives members a real opportunity to meet colleagues and share knowledge and experience. This is a particularly important way to stay connected to the profession – especially for lone workers and or those working from home.

If you want even more involvement and to learn new skills you can look for committee roles and opportunities to volunteer with the networks and groups. Visit www.informationprofessionaljobs.com to see the latest opportunities.

Demonstrating your professional knowledge

It is never too early to start thinking about the next steps in your career, and CILIP can give you the skills and tools to lay the groundwork for your professional development. As well as training and events, CILIP also accredits short courses

and a range of library school courses. For anyone looking at professional recognition for the work they do and the skills they use, there is Professional Registration. Professional Registration is backed by a strong network of support – from CILIP’s refreshed PKSB, which helps candidates identify strengths and areas of develop- ment, to hundreds of CILIP Mentors who volunteer their time with candidates. Pro- fessional Registration and CILIP’s PKSB have been developed with employers to meet real-world needs, enabling everyone on the professional register to demon- strate their skills and employability. A key aspect of Professional Registra- tion is that it is underpinned by CILIP’s recently refreshed PKSB. The latest version of CILIP’s PKSB was developed with the profession and employers, ensuring that real-world skills and knowledge provide a practical foundation to professional development. It means that anyone achieving professional regis- tration can demonstrate their value and impact to employers. CILIP will con- tinue to work with employers and other stakeholders to ensure the PKSB remains relevant now and into the future. The value of PKSB and Professional Registration also has international recog- nition, with several international Library Associations and major employers using it to underpin their research or form the basis of their own services and staff develop- ment. Claire Robe, CILIP’s head of Sector Development, said: “The PKSB is created by the profession for the profession. CILIP is proud to be the creator and guardian of that process. Other organisations recognise the breadth and depth of the PKSB and can

see how it can support their workforce and sector development ambitions.”(www.cilip.org. uk/professionalregistration).

Value and investment

Another way to invest in your professional development is to apply for one of the many awards, bursaries and grants that are available through CILIP’s networks and groups. Often these are designed to help members attend conferences or similar events, but some are available for research and training purposes (www.cilip. org.uk/Awards). Networks and Groups can also signpost members to other organisa- tions that offer awards.

Many of the events and training pro- vided by CILIP are discounted or free for members. There are also a range of discounts available – including 35 per cent off title from CILIP’s publishing arm , Facet; A 25 per cent discount on British Library membership; 20 per cent of Dell laptops, PCs and accessories; and more at www.cilip.org.uk/Discounts.

Another benefit is the ability to keep up-to-date with the latest thinking and developments in your field with insights, research and analysis from CILIP’s range of online resources. These include free access to sector focused abstracts and full text journal articles from a number of leading publishers – ProQuest, Sage and Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) – covering a broad range of library and information topics (www.cilip. org.uk/ProfessionalJournals), as well as sub- scription to Information Professional.
