W

elcome to the July/August issue of Information Professional! This month, we’re pleased to be celebrating new professionals and the tremendous contribution they make to the library, information and knowledge community.

I am currently leading an initiative on behalf of the ‘Management

of Library Associations’ section of IFLA called ‘Empowering Library Leaders and Diversity Worldwide’. It is a global conversation about the new generation of emerging library leaders and how they are tak- ing up the reins to shape a better future for our sector. It has been hugely exciting to read the stories of dozens of new professionals around the world who are moving into leadership and making change in their organisations. As we noted at this month’s successful CILIP Conference and Expo 2022 in Liverpool, this is a time of renewal and reinvention for libraries and information and it calls for new skills, fresh thinking, renewed energy and a different perspective.

This was very much the theme of a barnstorming keynote at CILIP Conference by Krystal Vittles, Deputy Director of Suffolk Library Ser- vices in which she shared her own journey into leadership and how she is navigating new challenges based on a strong personal sense of professional identity and purpose (or as she put it “I am a profes- sional. I have a profession. I will invest in my own professionalism!”) Speaking of IFLA, as I write this month’s introduction I have just arrived in Dublin for the 2022 IFLA World Library and Information Congress. I am looking forward to a week of meetings, presentations and inspiration from nearly 2,000 librarians from every corner of the globe. My sincere congratulations to our colleagues at the Library Association of Ireland who have moved mountains to deliver a suc- cessful Congress.

Of course you can be a ‘new’ professional at any age, and any stage of your career. Many people find their way into the profession later in life and I always greatly value the insight and expertise that people can bring to libraries and information from other professional disci- plines.

So whether you are a student or apprentice, just starting out in working life or have found your way to libraries later in your career – welcome! You are joining a fantastic, vibrant and increasingly diverse profession at a critical juncture in its story. Your insights, aspirations and ambitions hold the key to unlocking the potential of libraries and information to change lives. Here’s to new professionals of all ages!
