Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag 2013
The sailing sections of Assassin’s Creed 3 proved popular enough to base an entire sequel around and even now, Black Flag remains one of the fi nest pirate games of all time. You played as cocky Welshman Edward Kenway who, in his 18th century Caribbean adventure, raided coastal camps, engaged in fi erce naval battles, and plumbed the briny deep in search of sunken treasure. The real treasure, though, was the friends you made along the way. Specifi cally, your motley crew, who loved nothing more than belting out sea shanties as you navigated the waves and, on occasion, even hunted some poor whales.

The series eventually went back to go forward as it told the story of the fi rst Assassin, Bayek, and his journey through 49-47 BC Egypt. This stunningly realised setting was both dramatically expansive and densely detailed, letting you ride a horse (or camel) from the bustling city of Alexandria to haunting desert wastes with nothing but snakes for company. Climbing became gloriously unrestricted as the system now let you scamper up anything, while combat detached itself from its auto-lock past in free-form bouts where blades clashed and remote- guided arrows fl ew. You could even tame and train a crocodile!

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey 2018
The twentieth entry in the franchise takes place in Ancient Greece, 431 BCE, a whopping four hundred years before Origins. Placing a greater emphasis on player choice, you can pick your character, Alexios or Kassandra, pledge your allegiance to either Athens or Sparta, and even develop romantic relationships thanks to the introduction of dialogue trees. That’s not to say its blockbuster action elements aren’t as entertaining as ever. Large-scale battles inspire awe on both land and sea, while fi nishing moves let you call down a rain of arrows. We can’t wait to see where the series goes next.
