PREVIEW | Just Cause 4
Crossing the void 1 A wind cannon lets Rico harness the destructive power of nature by letting you control the direction of tornadoes. 2 Rico packs some serious heat on his wingsuit. 3 This jungle area is just one of Solis’ four distinct biomes. 4 Solis is packed with detailed structures that are just begging to be blown apart.
3 4
Just Cause 4’s game director Francesco Antolini on the perfect storm
balloons. You could then just watch it sail off into the sunset, although it’s more fun to grapple onboard, strap a few boosters to the tank’s rear, and zoom off in your rocket-powered panzer-blimp.
Winds of change However, don’t think that all this fancy
tech will turn Rico’s latest adventure into a physics-enabled cakewalk. The introduction of extreme weather across Solis delivers some of Just Cause 4’s most dangerous – and spectacular – moments. In one mission, Rico finds himself caught in the middle of a storm, with forked lightning arcing down to fry every patch of high ground. While taking to the skies in a wingsuit no longer seems such a good idea, you can still turn the forces of nature against your foes. Strap
an air lifter to any pesky Black Hand mercenary, for example, and you can hoist them into the heavens to receive a nasty shock. Intense storms and towering tornadoes
are the headline additions to Just Cause 4’s new weather system, but they’re far from the only examples of climatological chaos on offer. Depending on which one of Solis’ four biomes you’re exploring, you may also be hit by withering sandstorms or blistering blizzards, so you’ll have to keep your wits (and your wingsuit) about you to survive. But even when the weather’s all blue
skies and sunshine, Just Cause 4 is never less than spectacularly chaotic. Prepare to engage in gaming’s most creative brand of destruction when Rico makes his explosive return this December.
What’s your favourite thing about the game’s new weather system? I love something about each of our weather events. With the tornado, my ‘wow’ moment was when I realised that I could use it as a portable wind ramp. If you drive a car at a certain speed and you take the right angle, what happens is that as you approach the tornado, the car begins to lift off, so it’s literally a ramp that you can use to gain altitude and go back to being vertical.
Is it challenging to design a game with so much player freedom? We’ve got a golden rule, which is ‘Tell players what they have to do, but don’t tell them how they have to do it’. There are 10,000 different ways to get the objective in Just Cause 4 and I don’t care which one you choose. The really important thing is that it’s actually always your choice.
