hey say that history is your playground - and yet the tour guide at
the National Portrait Gallery still got mardy when we tried to organise a game of British Bulldog. But the Assassin’s Creed
series makes this slogan a reality, taking players on a bloody thrill ride through every era. From 10th century Jerusalem in the throes of the Third Crusade, to Victorian London at the birth of steam power (and also grappling hooks), no time period has been off limits in the 11 years since the series fi rst snuck its way into our hearts. Here are the fi ve games that defi ned the franchise.

This debut entry introduced us to the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins and the Templars. While the former fi ghts for free will, the latter seeks to control humanity by hunting powerful artifacts called Pieces Of Eden. Sure that’s a lot of plot to set up, but Ubisoft expertly submerged you in a bustling, lived-in world where you hid within crowds and scaled teetering towers with acrobatic parkour skills. The climbing in particular was a revelation upon release. Being able to clamber up everything made this a more tangible world than we’d
previously seen, and the game an immersive experience.
As stunning as dusty old Damascus was in the fi rst game, it’s hard to argue Renaissance Italy isn’t the sexier setting. In Assassin’s Creed II, not only could you hop across Venetian canals, or stroll the streets of 16th century Tuscany, you also did it as the loveable rogue Ezio, for many fans, the series’ most magnetic protagonist. Few other characters could sell you on West Side Story-style street fi ghts, appearances at masquerade balls, and stints piloting Leonardo da Vinci’s fl ying machine. He’s so charming in fact that Ezio starred in the next two instalments, giving the series its familiar face.
