OPEC FUND DEVELOPMENT AWARD 2021

The 2021 OPEC Fund’s Annual Award for Development was presented to the African Agency for Integrated Devel- opment (AAID) for the organization’s community work in promoting clean cooking technologies, training and advo- cacy for women and youth in the Kyaka II refugee settle- ment in Western Uganda. The settlement has a population of 125,000 refugees and asylum-seekers from the Demo- cratic Republic of Congo, nearly 80 percent of whom are women and children.

The OPEC Fund’s US$100,000 prize will help AAID promote clean cooking practices in Kyaka II, helping women and youth to switch to more efficient, safe and clean cooking practices. Cooking for their families is a task traditionally performed by women in the settlement community and can often be an exhausting and perilous practice.

AAID will also train community-based facilitators who can teach others in the construction of energy-efficient cook- stoves. Women will also be encouraged to undertake this activity to generate income and be provided with start-up kits to launch businesses. In 40 awareness sessions, AAID – in collaboration with local authorities – will demonstrate the critical importance of energy-efficient cooking methods.

Now in its 15th

year, the OPEC Fund Annual Award for

Development recognizes individuals and organizations for their outstanding work in, and contributions to, development. Previous winners of the award include Earthspark International for scaling-up energy access in Haiti; Vida Duti in recognition of her work in striving for sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in Ghana; Bangladesh-based BRAC for its support of Rohingya refugees; and the Bartolina Sisa National Confederation of Campesino, Indigenous, and Native Women of Bolivia.

Some 2.6 billion people around the world lack access to clean cooking solutions, with the lowest access rates in sub-Saharan Africa, creating wide-ranging adverse so- cial, economic and climate consequences. Committed to combating energy poverty, the OPEC Fund supports initiatives that enhance access to clean cooking inno vations and market-based solutions. This has improved the lives of millions of people in Africa, Asia and Latin America through effective partner ships with international organizations, public- private partnerships, foundations and social and non-governmental organizations.
