Established in 1976, the OPEC Fund for International Development is the only global development institution that provides financing from its 12 member countries exclusively to non-member countries to reduce global poverty and foster sustainability.
To date, the OPEC Fund has contributed to over 4,000 development projects in more than 125 partner countries for a total value of some US$190 billion.
The OPEC Fund combines support for long-term challenges such as the delivery of the SDGs in low and middle income countries with short-term emergencies such as, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. The Fund aims to meet these challenges by adapting quickly to remain relevant and
by aligning more closely with global goals in order to re- spond to partner countries’ and clients’ development needs.
The Fund responded to the global health crisis with the launch of a US$1 billion program and the introduction of fast-track procedures, which have allowed for the full utili- zation of the facility by the close of 2021 (see also pp 17).
In addressing global concerns, the OPEC Fund works with governments, the private sector and the international devel- opment community to boost economic resilience, stimulate economic growth and promote social progress around the world. The Fund offers loans, trade finance, grants and equity to its development partners.
