WATER & SANITATION

As the world was reminded during the COVID-19 pandemic how hand-washing has a distinct role in the fight against the spread of transmittable diseases, water and sanitation remain global challenges:

One in three people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water, and two out of five people lack basic hand-washing facilities with soap and water. In developing countries consumption of contaminated water puts people at risk of infectious diseases.

Water is interlinked with every development target and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) calls on to “ensure access to water and sanitation for all”.

IMPROVING HEALTH & LIVELIHOODS IN SIERRA LEONE Sierra Leone’s National Development Plan sets out six pri- ority sectors that include agriculture and water supply and sanitation. A US$20 million loan by the OPEC Fund aims to improve the socio-economic and environmental conditions

and reduce waterborne diseases for around 1.4 million people in the capital Freetown. The project will finance the construction of water supply infrastructure including treatment plants, reservoirs, transmission and distributions networks as well as the installation of 38,000 metered wa- ter service connections. It will also include flood mapping and tree planting to promote watershed regeneration.
