SOUND PLANNING AND WATER CONSERVATION MATTERS

The Western United States, including Arizona and the Phoenix metropolitan area, has been experiencing a drought for more than 20 years. Drought is a normal occurrence in the desert southwest; however, this has greatly impacted the Colorado River system including Lake Mead and Lake Powell. On August 16, 2021, the US Bureau of Reclamation announced it will elevate the Colorado River System to a “Tier 1” shortage status for 2022, meaning less water supplies available to Arizona.

Due to Arizona’s priority system, Avondale’s Colorado River supply will not experience a reduction in 2022. In other words, a water shortage on the Colorado River will not mean a water shortage at your tap in 2022.

Avondale’s water managers have been preparing for this shortage for decades. These preparations include:

} Securing a diverse and robust water portfolio to include renewable surface water, groundwater, and reclaimed water supplies

} Storing reclaimed water and surface water for future use } Investing in infrastructure, including wells to pump groundwater when surface water supplies are not available

} Supporting water conservation through ordinances and codes; developing conservation-based water rates; and offering an effective Water Conservation Program

While Avondale has a safe, secure, and reliable water supply now, and will not experience any cuts to our Colorado River supplies in 2022, we all need to continue to do our part to use water wisely. Water is a precious resource, and in the desert, each drop counts. Learn more about saving water with these resources:
