Case Study:
Atlas Trucking & Logistics
A
tlas Trucking & Logistics specializes in flatbed loads and has both an asset division and a logistics division. The company also operates Atlas Fleet
Services, an around-the-clock maintenance and repair shop dedicated to heavy-duty truck repair. Headquartered in Taylor, Michigan, Atlas Trucking began in 1999 as a private fleet hauling steel for its parent company, Eaton Steel Bar, the largest distributor of SBQ steel bars in the country. In recent years Atlas has diversified and now a substantial portion of their business comes from outside sources.
“One of the best examples of the power of IQ comes from supplying live data to our operations team,” says Ben Freeman, Controller for Atlas. “We created a dashboard that has a collection of key metrics, including margin for our brokerage side. After we went live with this dashboard, our brokers promptly exceeded the goal we had set for that first month, so we raised the goal for the next month. They beat it again, so we raised it again. They beat that goal, too, so we were forced to push our goal even higher. Our people deserve the credit for their hard work, but the dashboar
dashboard also deserves cr es credit. It proved proved
to be an essential tool that supported their efforts. It gives them live visibility into their daily and even hourly performance, and that has made a world of difference.”
• Tracking accounts payable at a high-level saves time by providing quick answers to many questions
“This dashboard uses graphics to show top vendors, top carrier settlements, top driver settlements, and the top categories broken down for asset and brokerage divisions. You can see quickly who was at the top of each category and where the money is going by AP category. If you want to know your top vendor last month and how much you spent, the answer is there literally in seconds. This dashboard is mainly used for obtaining a brief overview. In that role, it answers a lot of questions and saves a lot of time. You can also click on different months and the data changes instantly to show the numbers for that month.”
• A detailed view of accounts payable makes it possible to drill down and get details
“This report has ledger-style lists instead of graphs and chart, but it’s easy to use and it does a lot of the heavy lifting for the accounts payable audit. Many questions can be answered through this report without needing to export anything to Excel. The basic layout provides a macro-level view. By drilling down and filtering, you can get to specifics instantly.
