Hoekstra Transportation: Giving Back to the Community
E
fforts by businesses to support the surrounding community can be beneficial in all kinds of ways. That certainly has been the experience of Hoekstra
Transportation, a carrier based in Kankakee, Illinois that has been a user of McLeod Software since 1999.
“It’s about community partnerships,” says Lori Teders, Director of Administration for Hoekstra. Two recent events provide perfect examples.
Teens, Trucks, and Traffic, which Hoekstra hosted in October of last year in conjunction with the Illinois Trucking Association, gives high school students a tremendous opportunity to learn about driving in traffic in general with a specific emphasis on understanding the challenges faced by truck drivers.
Hoekstra worked with the high schools in their area, and asked them to send students from their driver’s education classes. “Every student within the entire county who was a driver’s education student was invited,” Teders says.
The event had four sessions, one led by local police, one led by state police, one conducted by paramedics, and a final session presented by the Illinois Trucking Association.
“Having these encounters with police lets students start building relationships with the officers that they may encounter while out driving,” Teders says. “The message from the police is that they are there to help and that they want everyone to get home safely.”
The Illinois State Police brought a “rollover car” with crash- test dummies to illustrate how rolling over affects drivers and passengers. They also let students wear goggles that demonstrate how it feels to be driving while impaired.
“The interactive aspect of this session kept the kids involved,” Teders says.
Street Smart, a group of paramedics from Miami, Florida, presented a traffic accident reenactment. “They did such a great job of making it feel real,” Teders says. “You could
