NEWS ROUND-UP New York JFK T8’s new luxury look

Airport retailer International Shoppes, airport developer Westfield, American Airlines and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey all highlighted ‘the success’ of the new retail outlets at New York JFK Airport Terminal 8 last month. This took the form of an experiential

HKIA works on major T1 retail enhancements

Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) has announced a wave of ‘major enhancements’ to Hong Kong International Airport’s Terminal 1, including retail improvements. Included in the plans is a refreshed retail

and F&B assortment which is due to be built in the expanded landside Arrivals Hall. “Details of the expansion are still under

planning and will be announced when we invite tenders for the shops,” an HKIA spokesperson told TRBusiness. Meanwhile, work on the terminal’s

anchor duty free shops, which feature experiential concepts for cosmetics, accessories and liquor, are on track to open later this year. This follows both the CDF-Lagardère

Company Limited (artist impression above) and Shilla Travel Retail Hong Kong Limited’s concession victories earlier this year. Improvements to the landside

areas feed into wider plans for a more spacious Terminal

1, following

expansion work to the north of the existing building to provide over 40 new check-in counters, self- bag drop facilities, and additional baggage reclaim carousels. Other

features include the

construction of a 200-metre long weather-proof

‘Skybridge’

connecting Terminal 1 and the North Satellite Concourse. The expanded East Hall will feature

a roof garden, a two-level children’s play area, a recreational zone and a new outdoor garden.

event on 14 June where more than 12 of the terminal’s ‘A-list brands’ organised live demonstrations and activations after opening within the location last year – including several managed by International Shoppes, such as Chanel, Kiehl’s, Jo Malone and others. These new outlets are designed to improve

and invigorate the travel experience for both domestic and international travellers at the terminal, which also showed off its offerings to travellers and guests at its grand event towards the end of last month. This was well-received, according to

Mike McKanna, Managing Director of American Airlines who said that both Westfield and International Shoppes have introduced ‘an entirely new shopping experience that really caters to our modern, sophisticated customers and they’re loving it.’ In a statement from the retail and F&B

management company, the Westfield company also added: “Unique activations captivated guests, travellers and passers by at Terminal 8 last week.”

Newark builds new $2.4bn terminal

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) is spending $2.4bn to replace its old Newark Liberty International Airport terminal with a new 1m-sq ft Terminal A common-use terminal by 2022. The new facility will be delivered in phases

to minimise customer disruption and the master plan is expected to generate more than 10,000 jobs, $998m in direct payroll wages and $3.9bn in economic activity. Work will also include three roadway

bridges connecting the existing terminal area to the new Terminal A. Under the existing design plan, the

passengers will flow down from the centre of the terminal to the Departures Level where new F&B and retail concessions will be located. Concessions support areas will also be

incorporated into the design to create an invisible space, where goods can be moved around out of sight of passengers – as will be the case at the east end of the pier. Meanwhile, the north pier concourse will

have access to six gates, smaller concessions and retail support spaces; as will the south. The PANYNJ says the new terminal

will ‘set a new standard for air travel’ as it replaces the 44-year old existing facility. It has also been operating at one million

passengers a year over the 9m total capacity it was originally designed for. The new state-of-the-art terminal will

include 33 gates, a parking garage complex and the capacity to accommodate 13.6m passengers a year while retaining flexibility for future expansion, subject to future passenger demand.
