PROCESS EQUIPMENT No trouble with the pump

Tough operating conditions are no rarity when it comes to pumping substances in the chemical industry. Standard pumps quickly reach their limits here. Unplanned stoppages and production downtime are frequently the result. To avoid this, diagnostic and early warning systems are increasingly being used to detect faults. Paul Bungartz GmbH & Co. KG offers an alternative, with a concept for intrinsically safe pumps that is as unconventional as it is successful, equipped with a dry-running drive system and a likewise dry-running bearing unit. By now, this successful combination has been rolled out to all product ranges and sizes. The intrinsic safety is decisively apparent when it comes to operating reliability and a long service life. In addition, these special centrifugal pumps score points with many other special features.

The term “intrinsic safety” describes a factor that ensures hazardous situations cannot occur, even in the event of operator error. The special pumps manufactured by Bungartz have this intrinsic safety, which makes external monitoring systems superfluous. Because of their positive characteristics, these special centrifugal pumps have won a permanent place in industry, particularly in difficult applications and with problematic pumping media such as hot sulfuric acid, titanium tetrachloride or ammonium nitrate. The horizontal and vertical centrifugal pumps are likewise in use worldwide with liquids that have solid components, with boiling, gas-laden and toxic liquids and substances, and where feed conditions are poor and flow rates fluctuate. References come from the chemical and petrochemical industries, the fertilizer segment, from power plants and salt mines, from environmental technology and geothermal energy.

Since its beginnings 70 years ago, the company has focused on the intelligent application of physical principles. One of these is the tried and tested hydrodynamic seal, which primarily consists in distinctive blading on the back of the impeller, conveying the pumping medium away from the critical shaft gap transition, and thus protects the downstream shaft seal system. As a result, the pump is guaranteed to be sealed, depressurizing the downstream seal (mechanical, magnetic or lip seal, etc. in the event of a standstill).

One example of a hermetically sealed pump with high availability is the chemical pump MPCH DryRun . In this magnetically coupled horizontal pump, neither the bearing arrangement nor the magnetic coupling is in contact with the pumping medium. This allows it to be used

pumps, e.g. min./max. circuits, speed regulation using frequency inverters, and volumetric flow measurement, is superfluous.

independently of the liquid. Eddy current- free magnetic field transmission is possible thanks to a ceramic containment can, which facilitates significant energy savings. Sealing gas flows through a labyrinth area between the back of the impeller and the shaft bearing, forming a heat barrier with high temperature gradients, and thus ensuring a low bearing temperature. The grease- lubricated roller bearings have a minimum service life of 32,000 hours, and require neither monitoring nor maintenance. The design is ATEX-compliant, suitable for use with melts, and secure against operator error (e.g. inadequate venting) and blockages. Here, too, the otherwise typical signals and control systems are superfluous.

Features and advantages of the MPCH DryRun • robust and durable design

• dry-running and depressurized magnetic coupling

• sealing and bearing technology operates independently of the pumping medium and is thus entirely wear-free

• grease-lubricated roller bearings with a minimum service life of 32,000 hours – without maintenance

• low installation and maintenance costs, low energy consumption, fast availability of all standard dimension sizes

The company uses the term “special physics” to describe the self-regulating behavior of the vertical pump series V-AN (where “AN” stands for abnormal). Centrifugal pump designated V-AN. This technology is based on control characteristics that are unique in the pump sector, because these pumps operate without suction. They automatically adapt to changing feed rates – in a similar manner to a siphon. When a medium flows into a container, the liquid level rises until the inflow and outflow in the vessel balance out. This takes place without any mechanical or electrical regulation equipment. These dependable pumps are self-venting and even survive continuous dry running undamaged. Additional equipment conventionally required for standard

Another advantage of the series is its versatility and the flexibility with which it can be used. Pumps in the V-AN series are suited for use with fluctuating feed rates, media at their boiling points or gas-laden media. All pumps are safe to dry run and dependable, self-venting, and have a low NPSH value (<0.1m). As problem-solvers, they are used for the total emptying of all types of containers, e.g. tanker trucks and railway tank cars, for the pumping and collection of condensate at vacuum filters, centrifuges, distillation columns, evaporation plants , and slop containers, where they operate for years fault-free. Following the trend of development, they are increasingly being built as complete pumping systems, which are extremely space-saving and can save investment costs. These and other savings such as reducing equipment costs are very important selection criteria for the V-AN self-regulating pump range. If the use of the pumps is taken into consideration in good time during the planning phase, it is possible e.g. to decisively reduce the installation size of a project, because neither pits nor support frames nor buffer tanks need to be built. In individual cases, these savings can amount to millions.

All Bungartz pumps are specifically designed for each application. The design and technical expertise regarding the materials available – from stainless steels to silicon carbide, and the correct combination of these – is an established part of the Bungartz consulting services, as are the selection of the correct seal and many other issues. The versatile and capable special centrifugal pumps, whose bearing and sealing technology is largely independent of the medium, help to solve even extremely difficult challenges. High levels of dependability and above-average service lives can thus be achieved.

Advantages of the V-AN range • self-regulating and self-venting

• insensitive to gas bubbles

• total emptying of tanker trucks and railway tank cars

• safe to dry run and dependable • no control system required

• unloading “heavy” media (density > 1.0 kg/dm³)

• pumping gas-laden media or media at boiling point

• saving equipment costs by reducing installation size and the need for feed vessels
