In Times of Urgent Need, Doing the Important Work

“What is important is seldom urgent. Urgent equals ephemeral, and ephemeral equals unimportant.” –John LeCarré

That’s been said many ways by many people—and has been misattributed so often to Eisenhower that there’s an entire decisionmaking tool devoted to it and named for him—but it’s what’s at the heart of it that matters.

I’ve often seen senior living staff and directors move

as if they’re on two time tracks, simultaneously. On one track, they’re picking up an empty cup, checking every inch of the room, answering a question about the schedule for the day—sometimes it’s so fast you barely notice it. These days, juggling masks, hand sanitizer, and wipes may be part of that drill. On the other track, there’s a slowness and serenity as they stop to listen, lend an arm, smile and wave, stop to chat. The only thing fast about it is the banter with residents—having a quick wit is part of the job. Being able to stop for a laugh is a great example of what’s important. It’s urgent now that we wash hands and take temperatures. But it’s important to have a sense of humor. It’s urgent to try to keep social distance. But it’s important to find a way, safely, to reach across that distance and express our feelings. And it’s urgent to work within resources that these days may be constrained.

Quality, however, is important. Finding solutions that put quality, the important part, first, yet save us time and resources is what this issue is all about. The experts who offered these tips and I hope they’ll free you to do what’s important. Another important thing that’s sometimes eclipsed by the urgent is education. Argentum has many solutions to keep that from happening (p.24). This issue should be out just before the Senior Living Executive Virtual Conference kicks off on Sept. 22, and it’s not too late to get in: visit conference.argentum.org. The Executive Director Leadership Institute is another important education

source, and it’s designed this year to give you time for the urgent things, too: Five sessions of 2.5 hours each, beginning Oct. 14. See argentum.org/edli for eligibility and agenda. And that’s all for this time. I know you have important work to get back to.
