Because labor costs can account for two-thirds of a typical community’s overall expense structure, hours are the place to watch, says Patrick McCormick, CPA, partner at Plante Moran. He recommends checking hours data daily. Here’s a sample report from an organization aiming for overtime to be between 3 percent and 5 percent, and non-productive time between 12 percent and 15 percent. Red-flag numbers are in red; numbers to keep a close eye on are in green.
