Q&A WITH THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
What is your top efficiency tip, and how did you learn it?
“Most people think that you can't affect or change your utility bills. Especially in an assisted living building, those bills are often classified as non- controllable. I changed the bathroom, storage rooms and other rarely used rooms to a sensor light switch instead of a manual light switch, and it has made an appreciable difference. I also request that maintenance check every apartment once per week to prevent leaks. You can be more cost effective and more energy efficient!”
Bethany Larkins, CDAL Executive Director Brookdale Avondale Brookdale Senior Living
“Have a great ‘right-hand man’ and delegate things that are in this person's wheelhouse. Manage your team according to their strengths so that they can provide support that is organic, genuine, and efficient. Allowing your team to use their gifts helps them shine and helps your whole organization improve. Any manager who has taken vacation or leave will learn that this enables you to take a step back from the day-to-day operations without a glitch.”
