Help with planning, boosting attendance and maximising profi t Events ‘Almost 500 people took part in our

virtual summer fete’ ‘By June 2020, it became clear that we wouldn’t be able to hold our summer fete, but there were still so many things we had to fund. We desperately needed a new online reading scheme and shelters for keyworker bubbles, plus we had annual subscription fees to pay. The summer fete is usually one of our biggest events, raising around £3,000 – so we had to do something to get those funds in. We launched our virtual

summer fete by setting up a JustGiving page, inviting the school and parish community to come up with creative ways to raise sponsorship. We posted a list of ideas but left it to the parents and villagers to develop innovative fundraisers. The idea spread quickly, with everyone brainstorming ways to raise money despite restrictions. Here are just some of them: ● Reception class held a treasure hunt, raising £570 ● Zak in Year 2 and his mum, Sam, delivered afternoon teas, raising £120 ● Wilf in Year 1 and his dad, Adam, cycled for 1.5 hours every day for 16 days as a

‘Human Hamster’, raising £361 ● Penny in Reception did a sponsored daily face paint with her family, raising £230 My daughters, Fiona and

Faye, wanted to hold a pet show, which we ran online. Participants donated £3 on JustGiving to enter their pet and submitted photos by email. We uploaded the images to Facebook, giving people a week to vote for their favourites. Those with the most likes were the winners. As well as fi rst, second and third places, we also had categories for best cat, best small animal and best exotic pet. Local businesses donated prizes, including a pet portrait for fi rst prize. It cost nothing to run, and we raised £460. Almost 500 people took part

in the fete, raising nearly £3,000! It wasn’t the same as our usual summer fair, but it was much easier – and it was lovely to see everyone’s creative ideas. The children were excited too, because they felt like they were making a difference.’ Louise Stiff, PTA member, Plaxtol Primary School, Plaxtol, Kent (97 pupils)
