Advice on initiatives and opportunities for generating funds Fundraising

‘We asked supporters to “donate” new books’

‘We were having a new library built and knew we needed to fundraise for more books. But with all our usual activities cancelled last year, we had to find a different way. School staff drew up a list of books

that would complement the curriculum and give the children a broad range of fun, enjoyable and educational reads. The school needed over 600 books to make the new library a fantastic place for the children to enjoy, so we set our fundraising target at £1,800. We launched an appeal through

social media and newsletters, asking anyone who could to buy a book for our new library. For every £5 donated, the PTA would purchase a book in honour of the donor. We had a stamp made which said ‘Kindly donated by…’, with space for a name. Parents who donated

had their child’s name written in the book to act as a lovely reminder that they helped build the library. We asked for donations via ParentPay,

requesting the equivalent of what parents may have spent at the fete or on after-school ice-cream. As an extra incentive, all donors were entered into a raffle to win a hamper full of treats. A lot of parents with multiple

children at the school made donations on behalf of each child. We had support from parents whose children are all grown up, those whose children haven’t started yet, and even from grandparents. We also approached local businesses and encouraged parents to ask their workplaces if they could donate. Many local companies were incredibly generous. The campaign ran for four weeks,

and we raised £3,626 – enough to buy everything on the list and more! We supported Hart’s, our local bookshop, by purchasing the books from them. It was cheaper than buying from Amazon. The bookshop told us it was the biggest order they had ever received and came at a perfect time. We were so pleased to have been able to help a local firm. There are now hundreds of new

books for the children to enjoy, and we’re sure they will love spotting their own name – and the names of their friends – in books for years to come!’ Kate Horrey and Madi Wilkie, fundraising team co-chairs, Katherine Semar Schools, Saffron Walden, Essex (480 pupils)
