We were thrilled to reach our target
in six months. Parents were probably the largest source of funds, though many of our suppliers and local businesses gave between £200 and £4,000 each. Our ward councillors gave £750 and we received two large donations of £5,000 – one from a local business and another from a parent. In addition, our PTFA ran a quiz night and our sixth-form students organised a sponsored The theatre opened just before
Covid hit, but it has been busy since October 2021 when we hosted the Maidenhead Dance Festival. One year on, we have hosted the dance festival for a second time, as well as numerous shows, performances and events. We held a grand opening VIP guests who had generously donated to the campaign. We also use the theatre for assemblies, exams and concerts. Our school musical, Matilda, was a sell-out, running for four nights with students delivering exceptional performances in their new venue. The theatre has proved to be a
popular asset for the community, with many dance and drama schools hiring it for their annual shows. We of performance use, raising a good amount of income for the school. Our PTFA runs the bar, which brings in additional funds. The lettings income covers the pay of a part-time theatre manager, Marissa Holden (above left), who promotes the technicians to run the lighting and used the theatre to host two major school fundraisers, including a performance by the Maidenhead Concert Band (who rehearse here) These performances raised over £2,000 for school funds. Grants for the arts
JOHN LYON’S CHARITY One of London’s largest and most trusted independent funders within the children and young people’s sector, JLC awards grants to schools and grassroots charities in nine London boroughs: Barnet, Brent, Camden, Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Harrow, Kensington and Chelsea and the Cities of London and Westminster. The charity distributes around £10-12 million in grants each year. Its Cultural Capital Fund, set up in response to the Covid-19 crisis, is providing additional funding of £2.5m over six years to ensure young people can access the arts. For example, a grant from the fund supported Old Oak Primary School, in Hammersmith and Fulham, in establishing a partnership with the Saatchi Gallery.

THE PAUL HAMLYN FOUNDATION: TEACHER DEVELOPMENT FUND The purpose of the Teacher Development Fund is to support delivery of effective and sustainable arts-based teaching and learning opportunities in the primary classroom, and to embed learning through the arts in the curriculum. Six large awards (of up to £150,000) are made each year, with the deadline for applications in November.

ARTS COUNCIL WALES Arts Council Wales has offered a variety of funding streams to schools, some of which are currently closed. The Go and See grant provides funding for visits to high-quality arts events in galleries, theatres,
arts centres and other venues. Other funds that have previously been available to schools include Go Creative, Creative Collaborations and the Lead Creative Schools Scheme.

THE GRANADA FOUNDATION The Granada Foundation wishes to encourage and promote the study, practice and appreciation of science and the arts, including drawing, architecture and landscape architecture, sculpture, literature, music, opera, drama, dance, cinema and the methods and means of their dissemination. Grants of up to £10,000 are available to organisations in north east England, including schools, as long as there is a community/outreach element to the project.

THE ELMGRANT TRUST The Elmgrant Trust offers small grants to individuals and organisations in south west England. Projects must fall into one of the following categories: projects which help to improve the quality of local life and welfare, or art projects which help to improve the quality of local life.

CULTURE MILE: SCHOOL VISITS FUND The Culture Mile School Visits Fund is a great way to help children experience the benefits of learning outside the classroom. Up to £300 can be obtained by schools in Greater London to subsidise a trip to cultural locations in London.
