44 SUB36
Lucy Grainger
Trainee solicitor, Backhouse Jones
25
Lucy qualified
as a solicitor in September and has already made an impact. She is helping a legal director spearhead the redevelopment of the company’s new innovative compliance reviews, and has begun looking for a solution to the 1,800 vehicles which strike rail bridges every year.
She is particularly interested in encouraging young people and women into the transport and logistics sector.
We created Sub36 to
celebrate and support that talent and once again we believe this list, drawn up without
ranking by our external judges, highlights
the achievements of some remarkable young people

DON’T SECOND GUESS WHAT YOUR FUTURE
LEADERS WANT By Rachel Bayley
Burnley Place brand manager (economy and growth)
In Burnley, and across Lancashire, we’re great at taking control of our destiny and not waiting around for someone to hand it to us on a plate. The same applies when it comes to nurturing young talent – we must put the work in now to reap the benefits of upcoming talent wanting to remain in our county in the future.
We did this when we launched the
Burnley.co.uk place brand and Burnley Bondholders. Perception of the borough has changed, hundreds of millions of pounds of public and private investment has been made and we have an array of amazing sectors our pipeline of talent can enter.
It’s imperative that today’s leaders don’t think they know best when it comes to raising up the next consortium of game changers. Ask them what they expect, their ideas and new ways of working, listen and then implement where appropriate.
In Burnley, we launched the Future Leaders programme for under 30s which does just that. They are the future of our borough, so it is essential they are at the centre of decision making and empowered to make decisions. It’s great to see Lancashire businesses following this ethos, which culminates in this impressive sub36 cohort.
