EU Skillswebsite if they wish to verify against the central register. It is important to highlight at this point that whilst registering for DrainSafe will not be a condition of NADC membership in the near term, the exiting provisions around certification to be an NADC member remain in place. NADC members are required to hold the qualifications relevant to the services that they offer, or if applying for NADC membership, to achieve those qualifications within 90 days of approval. This requirement does however provide a basis for NADC members to apply for DrainSafe registration and the plan is that increasingly DrainSafe accreditation will become the basis for tendering, sub- contracting and the direction of consumer business by key channels such

as the UK water companies. In order to apply forDrainSafe registration, contractors must be members of NADC first in accordance with best practice as set out by theTrading Standards Institute. A question that arises here however is that for those drainage operators that choose not to become NADC members they will simply not be eligible for accreditation under the new scheme. There are of course those thatmay argue, if cynically, that this is simply away of boosting NADC membership and training revenues because in actuality those operators outside of the schememay still hold all the relevant qualifications but not be under the Drainsafe umbrella scheme, but would still in effect be as qualified as any operators within the scheme. Perhaps itwould eventually mean that once established under the NADC banner the Drainsafe scheme could, if not should, be rolled out so that it is available to all even those that choose not to take NADC membership. There is another danger here of course. That is that with so many accreditation schemes already in place covering various aspects ofworks, specific topics and requirements fromvarious larger clients, there will be so many‘stickers’and logos already on the company vans, brochures and websites that this new scheme thismay simply get lost in the mix and ultimately become just another‘logo on the van’alongside all the others. If this becomes this the case the new schememay not necessarily achieve the heights of recognition that are being aimed at, particularly amongst lesser clientele circles and itmay become somewhat meaningless to the broader clientele that have no real interest in just howqualified an operator is but more howlittle they charge to complete thework.
