It is not just about belonging to a trade body, but also about the real and tangible benefits of being
amember.Aside fromthe exclusive supplier deals that are available to members, and the discount onNADCtraining and qualifications, there is also the flowof business enquiries fromtheNADCwebsite. With an increasing number of organisations specifying NADCmembership to qualify for tendering for work, and some larger contractors taking the decision to only sub-contract toNADC members, the emphasis on standards and competence is gaining increasing recognition in the market place. industry.Agreat example of thiswould be the Guidance provided by the Association as theCovid-19 emergency played out, and theNADCBoard felt that this should be widely shared across the whole industry and not just for members. in addition,NADC was very active in lobbyingGovernment for recognition that drainage contractors
qualified as essentialworkers in the early days of the pandemic, and also lobbied Government (alongside other industries and professions) to bring forward the flexible furlough arrangements from1stAugust to 1st July, which is what
happened. There are further examples ofNADCinitiatives that will benefit the whole industry below. The on-going development of the suite of NADCtraining courses and qualifications is covered elsewhere in this edition of Drain Trader, and the excitingnews is that both the SHEA Drain and Sewer (which brings CSCS affiliation and the all important CSCS card) and thenewIntroduction to Excavation and Repair qualifications are projected to go live in September.Withwork on-going on the revamped Drain Lining and Localised Repairs Course,NADCremains on track to complete the full range of skills courses in the run up to the launch of DrainSafe. Speaking of DrainSafe,NADCwill be holding a series of on-line events in the autumn for members as the final step in the consultation process on the DrainSafe Approved Contractor Scheme.Having gathered feedback froma wide range of stakeholders over the last 18 months it is only right that NADCmembers should have the final input to the Scheme in the lead up to launch in February
2021.At these events the proposed fee structure for signing up to DrainSafe will be presented aswell as howthe registration process willwork, and what the benefits of signing up will
be.The final shape of the Scheme will be determined after these events. TheHydrant App pilot in the South East is now
progressingwell. The App helps identify the closest hydrant to the contractor, which water company it belongs to, which standpipe is required and will even speak to the condition of the hydrant (in due course) – in particular if it is out of commission. For water companies, the App reports on hydrant usage and the condition of the hydrant pre and post extraction thus adding value for them aswell. Once the pilot has been completed, and the learning fromit has been fully assimilated, a plan will be developed for a national roll-out acrossUKand into the Republic of Ireland. NADCwould like to recognise FMConway whose employees are piloting the App and also the contribution fromFlowline, Sweeptech,McAllister, Glanville,Convert Water, Alpheus andWales Environmental Group which has enabled development of the App. In due course an extension of the App to coverwaste sites will be evaluated as a logical progression for the effective use of technology in improving industry
efficiency.NADC members will have access to the App at a

greatly discounted rate to non-members. Formation of thenewNADCCCTTV and RehabCommittee is nowwell underway and NADChas circulated its membership seeking nominations to join theCommittee. One of the key objectives of theCommittee will be to drive demand forCCTV surveys, both domestic and commercial, and leverage the value of the data that is collected to help the overall management of the drain and sewer estate acrossUKand Ireland in coming years. Naturally this will involveworking with external stakeholders such as theHighways, the EnvironmentAgency, the water companies and local authorities amongst others, and will further demonstrate the importance of the contractor industry to the national infrastructure. NADC’swork on gully maintenance and waste management alongside CIRIA and in liaison with the EnvironmentAgency is continuing. This is focused on a taking a rounded and pragmatic view of the subject with the intention of agreeing revised guidance that specifically allows for decanting within defined parameters, saving costs for all parties and reducing carbon emissions, and without detriment to the environment. It will also meana level playing field for allTankering and Vacuuming contractors across theUKin offering highway maintenance services. ThenewWRcManual of Drain and Sewer Cleaning which was developed with the assistance ofNADChas nowbeen released and will becomethe‘bible’for drainage contractors. All candidates forNADCcourses will be encouraged to have a copy of the Manual to underpin their training and
qualifications.ThenewManual is a best practice guidance document covering both blockage clearance and planned sewer cleaning and builds on and supersedesWRc’s Sewer JettingCode of
Practice. The extended scope covers all commonly used methods of drain and sewer blockage clearance and cleaning, includingHigh PressureWater Jetting, Rodding and the use electro- mechanical devices. It also includes guidance on drain tracing and location techniques used in investigating sewer blockages.
