complement the existing SHEA suite of qualifications that cover water, power, gas, telecoms, cross country pipeline and waste management. This course is designed as a‘must have’ for all drainage contractors and their employees. Drain Lining and Localised repairs –This course is a further development of the existing NADC Lining Course and is extended to include patching. It is a two day course but can be taken as two modules covering drain lining and localised repairs separately. The course covers the chemistry behind products, limitations of usage and proper installation techniques, and what technique is required for describer

applications. HighVolumeVacuum Safety Awareness –This course will highlight the dangers, operational procedures, and usage of various systems for contractors with larger tanker and vacuuming operations. Introduction to Excavation and Repair –This course covers localised excavation and repair, site health and safety and repair techniques. DrainMapping –This course will highlight the need for accurate location in the context of geography and topography and the application of safety practices. When asked the question‘Howwill the new scheme ensure that qualifications are

maintained over any period of Drainsafe accreditation?’the response was that all applicants must be up to datewith all relevant qualifications both statutory and as required by the DrainSafe competency framework. A database will be maintained by DrainSafe of the qualifications by registrant and automated reminders will be sent in advance of expiry, and evidence of renewal will also be required. DrainSafe registration is subject to annual renewal.DrainSafe will take into account any particular circumstances thatmay affect qualification renewal on a case by case basis, but registrants are expected to keep qualifications current. Such a scheme should limit the number of industry cowboys given that these are the most likely candidates for not applying for the scheme in the first place, so thismay be advantageous once the scheme become more widely known.

QUALIFICATIONS

Aswe all knowand as previously mentioned, there are numerous legal requirements, guidelines and codes of practice that call for training to a set minimum standard to allow operators towork in the drainage and more general underground construction sector. The training requirements for many of these are based on independently producedManuals which have become industry if not globally recognised as the practices to followto ensure quality controlled and safeworks are undertaken.
