MAIN FEATURE

HOWTHINGSHAVE CHANGED

Not somany years ago the idea of gully cleaning and emptying required one suction truck and two operatives – one to drive and one to operate the hose boomsystemand clean the gully. Nowwith increased traffic, more stringent health and safety requirements and the rise of the compensation culture it is evermore important that the approach to gully cleaning come fromamore safety conscious base.

Today the idea of gully cleaning requiresmuch more in theway of resources than ever before. Signing is required towarn road users of mobilework ahead; a number of additional staff is needed to operatemobile traffic control systems (usually stop/go boards) and they are linked usingwalkie-talkies to direct single lane traffic around the operating gully cleaning unit; the unit itself hasmore built-in safety features than older vehicle types and the unit should carry support equipment tominimise the need for operatives toman-handle gully grills, largewaste deposits etc.,much ofwhich comes supplied on at least one other support vehicle.Of course, all of the operatives need safety gear such as high-viz vests and other clothing, hard hats, gloves etc.

So, the job no longer entails simply running a suction truck down a length of road and
