over the existing embankment and lowering it very precisely into place. Doing all that – twice. Amazing”.
TylerMcKeller of LivingWater Services agreed: “The local company CraneWorks of Birminghamdid a fantastic job. I’mstill amazed at howthey got the plant in!”.
Then came the putting together of the CSBR, with a navy-certifiedwelder brought in specially fromMobile, Alabama-based shipbuilding company, Austal.
Gary Huffman fromKrebs Engineering added: “We’re a close community of companies, ready to respond. Everythingwas a truework- together proposition – but nowwe had to put the equipment to the test.We needed to show the Lockerbie Homeowners Association that their investment in equipment designed for 25-plus years of very reliable, low-maintenance operationwasmoneywell spent”.
The newplant has nowbeen operating since January 2020. Some early discrepancieswith the site’s power supplywere soon solved.
‘We haven’t had a single issue’
TylerMcKeller commented: “Aswith all new equipment it can take a littlewhile to get used to.We needed to find the bestway of understanding the control system, but since
then, froman operator’s point of view,we haven’t had a single issue – andwe knowthat ifwe ever need advicewe can easily reach out to JimAitkenhead at Lakeside and EdMoore at The Eshelman Company. They’ve both been top notch”.
He continued: “The plant is performing very well indeed. It produces immaculatewater. We’re nowgetting TSS (Total Suspended Solids) of between just 1 or 2 – and for our 0.3 mg per litre limit on phosphoruswe’re typically getting 0.1. You justwouldn’t expect to see those results out of a plant that is non- filtered. This is all themore phenomenal because compared to before,we’re only having to use a very small amount of chemicalswhen flows are lowand temperatures are high”.
Gary Huffman fromKrebs Engineering agrees: “The operation of the plant has been tremendous. The effluent looks very good indeed”.
With the Cahaba River regarded as a natural preserve, the newLockerbie plant – largely unmanned –which is under the jurisdiction of the ADEM(Alabama Department of EnvironmentalManagement) has already been visited by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).

TylerMcKeller said: “Theywere very impressed with the outstandingwater quality. The discharge point here is not forgiving at all so we have to be right on top of the operation – but nowwe have the newtreatment system and our very goodmonitoring system,we have every confidence in it”.
Permit requirements are nowbeingmet comfortably, andwith the saving for the customer on chemicals set for around $7,000 pa, this unofficial partnership of like-minded Alabama companies has every reason to be confident about the futurewellbeing of the Lockerbiewastewater facility.
“Whatwe all like”, said EdMoore fromThe Eshelman Company, “is that Lakeside are always responsive. They take huge pride in the longevity and quality of their equipment. We knowthat in the future, regardless of the age of a system, they keep exceptionally good records and documentation – and thatwe can still get parts. I knowfor sure that theywill always help us find away to keep everything shipshape. This plant is a great ‘Showand Tell’.
LivingWater’s TylerMcKeller concluded: “When JimAitkenhead at Lakeside said that their CSBR couldmake such an impact on the phosphorous biologically, I thought I’d need to see it to believe it – but hewas right”.
