Launched in 2019, the RioCom jetvac combi has been a success story for the firm, with numerous drainage companies in the capital and across UK cities recognising the benefits of a compact tanker for use in urban areas where regulations, congestion and restricted access are an issue.
Mark Cox, UK Sales Director at Rioned, said that whilst the new regulations are hugely important for the health and safety of road-users, operatives and the wider public, changes to statutes have laden firms with additional tariffs or the need to make capital investments in newer emission-compliant vehicles. “The low-emission zone (LEZ) regulations introduced in London are being rolled out across the UK.” he explained. “Glasgow, Birmingham and Bath have already introduced LEZ regulations with many other cities set to follow suit. I also expect that other major UK cities will soon follow London’s lead by implementing Direct Vision Standard (DVS) licences for HGVs over 12-tonnes. I do not really want to call it an opportunity for Rioned, as that detracts from the importance of the new regulations, but it has certainly brought about a rethink among contractors about the type and size of vehicles and equipment they need.”

The small tanker has been described as a ‘game-changer’, with London-based drainage contractor Aquaflow Services Ltd choosing the RioCom as a LEZ- compliant solution that was powerful enough to tackle the work that the firm undertakes in Central London.
Aquaflow Managing Director, Keith Borrett, said the business has had to adapt to stay on the right side of the regulations: “We are working towards ensuring our fleet becomes emissions compliant and we have been impressed by the performance of the RioCom. It offers flexibility for us to work in less accessible areas, and where it is not viable for us to use a big tanker.”
In terms of Vehicle Safety and Driver Welfare, the scope of safety and welfare equipment supplied as standard with Rioned vehicles and equipment has also evolved, in part due to the requirement for single-man operations.
Mark Cox explained: “Protecting both engineers and the public is a priority. All our vehicles are fitted with LED warning beacons, high-visibility seam lighting and directional lamps to illuminate working areas. We also install engineer welfare kits that include hot water wash facilities, first aid stations and heater systems for drying clothes and equipment.”
