Survey reveals the frequency of drainage work rectification among contractors

In the drainage industry, one persistent issue contractors face is being called out to rectify improperly completed drainage work. This not only impacts your business but also the overall reputation of the industry. To better understand the scope of this challenge, we surveyed over 300 DrainSafe/NADC members, aiming to uncover how often contractors are asked to fix substandard drainage work. The findings highlight a recurring problem that requires attention and action.

As a DrainSafe/NADC contractor, how often have you been called out to rectify drainage work that was improperly completed?

An issue that frequently comes up in the drainage industry is the number of times contractors are called upon to rectify work that has been improperly completed. It’s a challenge that not only affects your business but also the reputation of the entire industry.

To gain deeper insight into this issue, we recently conducted a survey of over 300 DrainSafe/NADC members. The goal was simple: to understand how often contractors are being called out to fix drainage work that was not completed to the required standard. The results of this survey shed light on a recurring problem that needs addressing.

The survey results

The findings were revealing and highlighted a variety of experiences among DrainSafe/NADC contractors:

• Frequently (more than 10 times a year): 27.8%

• Occasionally (5-10 times per year): 25%

• Rarely (1-4 times per year): 36.1% • Never: 11.1%

58 A closer look at the results

The fact that nearly 28% of respondents indicated they are called out to rectify drainage work more than 10 times a year is a concerning statistic. This represents a significant proportion of contractors who face frequent issues with poorly completed drainage work. These instances not only disrupt the flow of their business but can also lead to financial losses and damage to their professional reputation.

On the other hand, 25% of contractors stated they are called out to rectify drainage issues between 5-10 times per year. While not as frequent as the first group, this still highlights that improper drainage work is a recurring issue across the sector.

36.1% of contractors experience these calls only rarely (1-4 times per year). This group seems to have fewer issues with rectifying improperly completed work, but it is important to note that even a small number of these calls can add up over time and cause a strain on resources.

Lastly, 11.1% of those surveyed said they have never been called out to rectify improperly completed drainage work.

While this group is the smallest, it represents a segment of contractors who maintain a high level of quality in their work and may have a robust process for ensuring that everything is done right the first time.

The implications for contractors and the industry

These survey results underscore a significant challenge facing the drainage industry. The fact that so many contractors are frequently called out to fix subpar drainage work indicates that improper installations or repairs are still common. This could be due to several factors:

• Lack of experience: Some contractors may not have the necessary experience or training to complete drainage work to the required standards.

• Cost-cutting: In some cases, substandard work may be the result of contractors cutting corners in order to reduce costs, but this often leads to costly problems down the line.

Inconsistent standards: The drainage industry is vast and can
