New homes will also be an essential part of the development mix. One of the city’s first Build-to-Rent schemes has been proposed: a 168-unit Private Rental Sector development backed by Legal & General Investment Management. Completion is expected in Autumn 2018. Te cultural and food offering is growing
too, with the Temple Quay market now a weekly fixture, and independents such as Yurt Lush and artisan bakery Hart’s providing great food with a unique Bristolian twist. With the Temple Quarter’s location at the eastern gateway of Bristol’s historic harbour and almost 1km of waterways within the district, there is significant potential to develop the waterfront as an attraction.
Infrastructure improvements
At the centre of the district is the Grade 1 listed Temple Meads station, one of the oldest surviving railway terminus buildings in the world. Passenger usage of the station is projected to rise from 11 million to over 22 million by the end of the next decade, and Network Rail has invested significantly into the electrification of the Great Western route. Tis will result in faster and more frequent services between Bristol and London, with four trains an hour by 2019. Planned investment by Bristol City Council and
partners including Network Rail, Homes England and Central Government, will see the station itself redeveloped into a twenty-first century integrated regional transport hub. Improvements will include better access to the station from the east of the city; more retail and leisure uses in and around the station and extended and improved public and ticketed areas.
